This encampment comes shortly after a UN report found Canada's immigration system to be a "breeding ground" for "modern slavery," and just days after @GhadaaSharif and @KenyonWallace's Toronto Star investigation found that the @JustinTrudeau government is giving directives to ESDC officers to expedite LMIA processing, thereby giving employers the green light to exploit immigrant workers.

You were given student visas. To support you, you were given work permits. With your studies done, LEAVE. On what grounds should you be given the extension? I supported the students at airport rd and derry rd that were duped by the agents. Not these. This is nonsense. The demands: 👉 Extend Post-Graduate Work Permits expiring in 2024-25... why and on what grounds 👉 5-year PGWP for all international students... Why? 👉 Stop LMIA-based exploitation ... It's the employer's issue not the govt 👉 Fair pathway to PR... you had NO intentions to study, but your goal was PR. Where does PR come in student visa? Did anyone promise you a PR with a student visa? Pack your bags and leave.

My guess is a lot came to Canada with no intention of ever going back. No sympathy for them.

Their parents are sending them money from back home, selling whatever they have, and while they struggle over there, the students struggle over here. That’s not fair," he said. He went on to explain that the government should at least give them an extension so they could have a chance to qualify in the draws and stay in Canada. He mentioned that if he were to "invest" exorbitant sums of money to illegally buy an LMIA from an employer today, he would qualify to stay in Canada in the next draw. ![FEARS OF MASS DEPORTATIONS International students and foreign workers have erected tents in Brampton, Ontario, to protest recent changes to Canada's immigration policy. They say they will not abandon their protest until the government reverses its decision. "This is the situation they created. They miscalculated how many immigrants they want, how much housing they have, how many they can accommodate over here, and now they're blaming it all on us," said one protester. I asked him if he thinks there are too many international students in Canada. He pointed out that some employers charge workers $20,000 for LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to help convert their study permit into a work permit. "These [practices] need to be controlled. The government has to control immigration, and that's not a problem. But whatever [many] you've taken right now, you have to accommodate those, right?" he explained. "You sold a dream of a better life: Come here, study, get a work permit, stay," he added. At the protest site, signs reading "no illegals on stolen land," "no more Komagata Maru," and "no mass deportations" are displayed next to their tents. Most of the protesters are from Punjab, so I asked if they've faced exploitation from employers within their own community, whether community politicians in positions of power in Canada are helping them, and what organizations are lending aid to them.
