receipts and invoices is an underrated proving ground for AI apps. structured data, clear success criteria, immediate feedback loop. if your AI handles bookkeeping reliably you've solved the hardest reliability problem in the consumer use case

just create a script that scans your emails and pulls the receipts into a spread sheet you can even incorporate ai to use some intelligence in the filtering process.

fantastic small application to solve everyday use case - you could do so much with AI without trying to solve the unsolvables.

self-hosted is the right call for financial data. most cloud OCR services train on your uploads by default and people don't realize it. the privacy angle alone makes this worth running locally even if extraction accuracy is slightly lower

Self-hosted matters, but the hard part is the messy long tail. The useful version is not just OCRing clean receipts, it is handling duplicates, weird tax formats, partial photos, and giving people a clean review queue when confidence drops.
