BREAKING: The IRS is making its free tax-filing platform permanent and open to all 50 states. This tax season the IRS saw success with a pilot program in 12 states. Now, they're expanding.

"More than 140,000 users successfully filed returns using Direct File during the 2024 season and the pilot saved an estimated $5.6 million in tax preparation fees, the agencies announced in April."

I'm sorry - why is this just now happening? The IRS already has your tax info. Every other country just sends you a tax return and says "look good?" Yet we let a middleman like TurboTax come in and do essentially nothing because they paid some lobbying money?

Now, can they just send us a bill instead of making us randomly guess how much money we owe them.

Turbotax gonna be mad as hell when they lose 90% of their (hostages) customers.

Can we please just adopt the European model, where only business owners need to file? Doing so wouldn't benefit me personally (I own a small business) but enough already, making workers jump through hoops just to verify what the IRS already knows.
