Denzel Washington’s epic monologue towards the end of Training Day was largely improvised on set. Director Antoine Fuqua was so blown away by his performance, he says he thinks he "forgot to yell cut”. He explains… “That’s Denzel. He was just in his zone. I mean, that was one of those moment...people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go...it's a great tool. It's gonna be a great tool, I think...but the emotion, and the moment that an actor can bring - you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like - I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator - who was shaking- I looked over at the guy - I was like, “please tell me you got that.” Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take - I mean, how do you tell an actor like that, that that wasn't good enough? …He walked over to me, and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, “you good?” He said, “you good?” I said, “Yeah…” Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it. "Putting cases on all you." He kind of added some things in there. And then he just went into a whole other zone with the whole King Kong thing- with Pelican Bay - Denzel started that. That was Denzel. That was him, man. He just kind of lit up, and I think I forgot to yell cut. I was just watching it, because everybody started walking away, and I'm just watching him, and then he lights a cigarette - and he's talking - and I'm just watching him. That's the largest "tiny puppy" I've ever seen 😮🥰 We got a bond quite early on. He used to follow me around the pen since he was little. We used to play hide and seek. I used to hide behind the wall and run to the other side and he would run after me. But the bigger he got, this big bull coming bouncing after you probably wasn't the best idea. But he loved a little bit of hide and seek. So he's too old now, he doesn't play hide and seek anymore. We just play cuddles instead. I don't even know how cuddles started. You know, one day I was just having a really bad day and he was lying down, he was flat out, and I was just like 'Oh, I just need a cuddle.' And I just talked to him and he just turned his head and cuddled right into me. I was like, 'Oh, he loves cuddles.' And ever since then we've had cuddles every day 💖 He's never been like a proper bull. He's never had any badness in him really. He's just been as quiet as a lamb ever since. I go up to the cows, they kind of keep me sane if you like. He's literally my world. When you go up and he's here peering over the top of the wall with his little ears, just checking to make sure it was me. He just literally is my safe haven. He puts some sense into me and calms me down, chills me out. And I'm like a different person when I walk back out that cowshed. So yeah, he's literally my world. At one point John Travolta was going to play Manny in Scarface, but they went with unknown actor Steven Bauer because they wanted someone who was actually Cuban. At the time, Bauer was a struggling actor being pigeonholed into becoming a soap star. He explains… "I left Hollywood because I wasn't getting really good roles, I was getting stupid roles in television, and I was like, "Fuck, I gotta get in." And I met Stella Adler, the great teacher, and she said, "Come to New York, darling, study with me. "You have to become an actor." So I went to New York. So I'm in New York for like a year, and at the end of the year, I'm starving - my agents in Hollywood think I'm absolutely nuts, and they're like, "You've gotta come home, or at least go in for a soap opera in New York, you have the right type, blah blah blah" And I'm like, "No, no, I'm not doing that." And they're like, "But you're gonna starve." And I go, "I'll deliver furniture." - So I was delivering furniture. And then on my last day, finally they come in, "We have a meeting for you. An audition for a TV movie, and maybe for another independent feature." And I go, "Okay." "So we'll get you the airfare and come home." - I go, "Okay, I'm coming home." So I'm in New York on that last day, and my manager calls me, she goes, "Wait, before you go to the airport. They're casting a movie with Al Pacino, it's called Scarface, and it's a remake of an old movie. And the second lead is a tall, handsome Cuban boy, who's fun, and that's you - It's to play his best friend." And I go, "Yeah, what shot do I have with that!?" And they go, "No, they want someone new. They want someone new." - So I go uptown… She (the casting agent) opens the door - and she goes, "Come in, come in, come in, come in. Sit down, tell me who you are. Tell me what you've done. Tell me what you're working on - You've done theater? - “Yeah”, and television? “Yes." “You speak Spanish?" - I go, "I'm Cuban."
