Built this 3D-printed VTOL fixed-wing aircraft from scratch. The airframe is made from ABS/ASA, reinforced with carbon fiber, and powered by an F405 flight controller with GPS-assisted flight modes. Seeing a pile of parts turn into a flying aircraft is always worth the effort. 🚁➡️✈️

Cool, avoid the carbon fibre as it's been tested to show it's weaker than normal filament and more expensive.

One of the first aircraft to use electrical flight controls with no mechanical linkages, the Balzac 001 was an experimental VTOL aircraft developed by Dassault in the early 1960s. Built as a technology demonstrator for the planned Mirage IIIV supersonic fighter, it was powered by eight Rolls-Royce RB.108 lift engines and a single Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet. The aircraft achieved its first free flight in October 1962 and completed the first full transition from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight in March 1963 but was destroyed in an accident the following year.

The sequence of events in this flight simulator clip is incredibly satisfying to watch. It starts with a tight, precise turn, followed by reverse thrust to reposition the aircraft for departure. The oleos compress and rebound beautifully over the deck before the aircraft powers into a full-throttle takeoff from one of the shortest "runways" imaginable. ✈️⚓

DEADLY AIRCRAFT ICE!! This can take down an aircraft faster than you think, unless the aircraft is properly equipped. Visible moisture (clouds) + freezing temperature = ice. Especially in tops of cumulus clouds, even in the hot summer months. For us pilots I’m canada, winter, spring and fall offer lots of icy IFR flying to contend with. If your aircraft isn’t certified for flight in icing conditions, cancel the flight, and fly another day 🫡👨‍✈️👩‍✈️✈️ 📸 by ig/evan_lufty

While the pilot operates the aircraft, our team monitors from the telemetry trailer, gathering holistic aircraft data like engine temperatures, airspeed, and battery levels. The Skyraider II is a single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft designed for light attack and armed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) for SOCOM.
