TRANSITION FLIGHT | Midnight has completed transition flight at a speed of 100+ MPH – taking off vertically, accelerating until it transitions from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight, cruising on the wing and then landing again vertically. Over the past few months, our Midnight program has consistently delivered strong results. We're now routinely flying longer, faster & higher as we expand the aircraft’s operational envelope. Recent flights have exceeded 55 miles, more than 30 minutes of flight time, altitudes up to our 10,000-foot service ceiling, and speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. These missions are providing valuable certification data, while closely mirroring the majority of mission profiles we expect in early urban deployment environments. Our next flight test phase with Midnight will be piloted VTOL, including full transition flights with our type certification intent four-blade aft propellers. Unlike the CTOL envelope that we are now close to completing testing on, the VTOL and transition flight regimes are not new for Midnight, as we have previously completed an extensive flight test campaign with Midnight without a pilot onboard. Our progression from non-piloted VTOL to piloted CTOL to piloted VTOL & CTOL campaigns is optimized for safety and disciplined execution that builds our readiness for commercial operations. Midnight’s controls are innovative and simple, using two side sticks to control altitude, speed, and direction during flight. Think of it like manual vs automatic in cars. Because Midnight is fly-by-wire, software translates the pilot's movements with the sticks to automatically transition between flight modes, smoothly speed up or slow down, and hold the aircraft's position, airspeed, and direction. This allows pilots to focus more on the flight, not the mechanics of commanding several different control surfaces all at once.

We’ve entered the next phase of our flight test program, showcasing piloted Midnight flight, as well as CTOL capabilities. The piloted flight featured a conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) demonstrating the robustness of Midnight’s landing gear which is capable of performing both vertical and conventional take-off and landing operations. One of the first aircraft to use electrical flight controls with no mechanical linkages, the Balzac 001 was an experimental VTOL aircraft developed by Dassault in the early 1960s. Built as a technology demonstrator for the planned Mirage IIIV supersonic fighter, it was powered by eight Rolls-Royce RB.108 lift engines and a single Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet. The aircraft achieved its first free flight in October 1962 and completed the first full transition from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight in March 1963 but was destroyed in an accident the following year.
