BVAS Was Procured With Android 10, Upgrading It Could Require Hardware Changes And Slow Down the System - Bayode Apart from the security features of Android 10, we also have our own security system. The BVAS devices were procured with Android 10 in 2021, and their specifications were designed...

Listening to the Director of ICT at INEC explain the BVAS situation honestly raises serious questions about the technical capacity behind some of these appointments. His explanation conflates OS upgrades with hardware upgrades. Oga, let me school you small. Moving from Android 10 to a newer supported version does NOT automatically require upgrading the RAM. It depends on the chipset, RAM, storage, firmware, drivers and, most importantly, whether the device manufacturer supports the target Android version. If a newer Android version genuinely causes unacceptable performance, INEC should be able to demonstrate that through proper security testing and controlled performance benchmarks. “It could slow the system down” is a possibility, not a technical justification for leaving devices on an ageing OS. And having an additional INEC security layer does not magically eliminate vulnerabilities in the underlying Android kernel, system services and other privileged components. The questions @Ruffydfire raised about the security patch level were important. Unfortunately, we didn't get a detailed explanation. What is the current security patch level? What are the actual BVAS hardware specifications? What Android versions does the manufacturer support? Has INEC tested a newer supported Android version on the existing hardware? What is the vulnerability management and patching strategy? He doesn't have to reveal sensitive security information on national television, but Nigerians deserve a technically credible explanation of the general approach. And yes, upgrading poorly can cause performance problems but that's an argument for competent engineering, testing, staging and benchmarking, not an excuse to avoid upgrades. If INEC genuinely, i mean GENUINELY ooooo, wants to eliminate avoidable glitches on election day, the solution is proper infrastructure assessment, OS and security updates, application optimisation, server capacity and redundancy, load testing, disaster recovery and end-to-end testing well before election day. As a software engineer and data analyst, I would gladly offer my technical expertise to help review and improve the system at NO COST, i mean FREE, totally FREE Nigerians deserve an electoral technology infrastructure that is secure, resilient and properly tested not explanations based on assumptions.

Android 10 has obvious security vulnerabilities And upgrading doesn't require any hardware change

The trust deficit is immense and these guys aren't even trying to restore any atom of trust. I'm not sure how many Nigerians have any trust in the APC agency called @inecnigeria Unfortunately, they won't see my post as they successfully blocked me over 3 years ago.

Who are the guys who advised the Nigerian government to buy devices that require hardware changes simply to update the software version? How do we have people in power who can't think for themselves? What happens to these people?

Why did you guys procure a BVAS machine with Android 10 in 2022 when we already have Android 12 and 13? Almost a trillion Naira was budgeted, approved and released for this election but here we are again talking about machine upgrade and the likelyhood of it failing again. Same old stories every four years.

You budget money for the latest tech systems and infrastructure, but when it's time to tell the people how the budget is spent, you tell them the old system works fine, and the people should accept it just the way it is... My question: why then was such a huge budget approved in the first place if you know you are just going to use the old tech systems and infrastructure all over again?

Could you imagine this rubbish.. which kind of country is this… with all the money budgeted for elections, you guys can’t upgrade your system.. said android 10 is working fine… while we are on android 17 which is faster and will save time during accreditation.. they do this every election period, they would use sweet mouth to tell everyone that they are already snd that everything is working fine but on election day, glitches, bvas failures and malfunctioning… now that they have time and money to fix and upgrade their systems.. after election same person will come out to us that , technology is not 💯 percent reliable, they will apologize and expect us to move on

They lies are being rehearsed. We were being told about glitches in the servers. We had some BVAS that failed to accredit voters. For 3 years with billions allocated to INEC, nothing has been worked on.

When a journalist responds to a guest on live TV with "I am not comfortable with that" what does it mean? Rufai is not comfortable with the guest's response on behalf of all Nigerians? We Nigerians, in general, need to elevate our level of language.

isn't ready for a credible election that will be seen to be free. You procure a BVAS with an almost outdated version of the OS and expect that you wouldn't have failures in the usage. It makes no sense doing same thing and expect a different result. You claim to have experienced a glitch in 2023, till date you haven't explain to Nigerians what the glitch is actually, what caused it and it impact on the results released. INEC have little to no credibility and they don't bother. Nigerians should be ready for the same story of 2023. I just hope Nigerians will demand delivery of credible elections in 2027.

Whenever technology comes to Nigeria, it becomes awful. They intentionally make it look like it’s not supposed to work independently despite spending more than other countries/corporations with far greater number of voters. Nigeria is like this by design.

Locking a device permanently to one operating system is actually the cheaper route, not the smarter one. The billions budgeted for BVAS should have bought a system built to last beyond one election cycle, with room for multiple updates and upgrades, not overpriced gadgets that expire like agbado campaign promises, useful only until the next election and then suddenly “technologically obsolete.” It will never be well with @OfficialAPCNg and crooked Mahmood Yakubu.

So we bought devices in 2021 that supposedly can't be upgraded without replacing the hardware, and we're only hearing this now? This is an election system, not a disposable gadget. I mean, why upgrading was never properly anticipated.

This is not making sense. The rigging has already begun. Look at APC in osun collecting PVC from voters for small bags of rice. It’s a lie. @inecnigeria did no upgrade and there was no auditing done on the use of the money budget. It went into few pockets & the suffering continue

Android isn’t the issue with BVAS. The main issue is that it is more or less a useless system if it was designed to stop rigging then it has failed. But it is the entire system and not just BVAS.
