Idaho: Incredible work being done up on the Salmon Challis National Forest. They completed thousands of acres of prescribed fire this last week. You can see the vast amounts of dead standing fuels they are trying to mitigate. “Salmon-Challis National Forest staff successfully implemented 2,200 acres of prescribed fire, 13 miles east of Mackay, Idaho. This prescribed burn is part of the South Lost River Restoration Project. The purpose of this project is to improve forest health stand conditions and wildlife habitat by introducing fire back into a landscape that has missed historic fire return intervals. Missed fire intervals have led to declining forest stand health resulting from high tree densities and tight closed canopies. Using fire under prescribed conditions will result in canopy mortality and ground vegetation reduction that will improve stand health and wildlife habitat. Fire severities are expected to vary across prescribed fire area with some areas experiencing high severity fire which may result in 2-20 acre stand openings due to fire mortality.” Thanks to the individual who shared this view of the burn.

🚒 Structure Fire Assist – Quick Actions Make a Difference🔥 On Wednesday, July 24, CAL FIRE LNU responded to assist Lakeport Fire District with a residential structure fire. In this video, you'll see Engine 1468 from CAL FIRE LNU’s Kelsey-Cobb station arriving on scene and moving in to support firefighting efforts. San Bernardino County Fire and CAL FIRE Partner on Front Country Fuel Reduction Project SAN BERNARDINO, CA — The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, assisted by CAL FIRE, began Phase 1 of the North San Bernardino Front Country Fuel Reduction Project. This proactive wildfire mitigation effort is designed to reduce fire risk and improve protection for communities along the northern edge of the City of San Bernardino. The project will establish a 50-foot-wide fuel break extending approximately one mile from Highway 18 west to Devils Canyon. Crews will be removing vegetation and reducing available fuels that could contribute to wildfire growth and spread. Historically, several significant wildfires have originated in this area and threatened homes and neighborhoods throughout North San Bernardino. The construction of this fuel break will help slow the spread of future wildfires, improve firefighter access, and provide an additional layer of protection for residents and property. Work on the project is expected to take approximately one to two weeks to complete. Residents may see firefighting personnel, equipment, and vegetation removal operations occurring throughout the project area during this time. While this project represents an important investment in wildfire preparedness, San Bernardino County Fire reminds residents that the threat of wildfire exists year-round. After burning for over a month, The France Canyon Fire in the Dixie National Forest was called 100% contained late last week in Utah. The fire burned 35,000 acres. This footage shows some beautiful and healthy wildlife in the foreground as the fire burned behind them. Just having a dinner with a view. Thanks to Muley Photos for sharing this. Now the priority Fire in the Great Basin is the Monroe Canyon Fire, which may take well over a month as well to fully contain.

Today I’m in the upper north Truckee area with the CA Tahoe Conservancy and Sierra Nevada Conservancy, seeing how nature-based solutions protect Tahoe’s forests, marshes & watersheds. As Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, I’m learning how these on-the-ground projects build climate resilience and keep communities safer.
