What happened at University of Delhi is absolutely horrifying. A girl being openly molested and abused with caste-based slurs like “iske kapde utar” and targeted for being a Brahmin shows how unsafe our campuses are becoming. I am also a Brahmin girl and today I genuinely feel that I too could be targeted for the same reason. Is this what our universities have turned into? Places where identity becomes a reason for harassment? The University Grants Commission and the government must seriously introspect. What are they doing to ensure safety and unity on campuses? Policies should never create an environment where students feel divided, threatened, or singled out because of caste. Caste-based abuse -against anyone -is unacceptable. Safety, strict action against perpetrators, and zero tolerance for such intimidation must be the priority. Universities should build minds, not fuel divisions.

Lady in question is Christian that enrolled in the university. People enroll knowing the institution’s values and policies. The same principle should apply to every private institution: if you voluntarily choose to attend, you should respect its rules or choose another school that aligns with your preferences. Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the Annual Public Lecture at Osun State University, Osogbo on the invitation of the institution’s leadership. The lecture titled “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global Versus Nigerian Perspectives.” A topic that could not have come at a better time as we try to fix our tertiary education system I underscored a central truth that though education in my opinion is a fundamental human right and not a privilege , it can also be very expensive. In Nigeria, where over 1.9 million young people apply to universities annually and more than 130 public universities operate across the federation, the old funding model is no longer sustainable. That is why, during my time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, I sponsored and led the passage of the Interest-free Students Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act 2023, a transformative piece of legislation aimed at ensuring that no capable Nigerian youth is denied a university education solely because they cannot afford fees. And in one of his earliest acts as President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a strong believer in education signed that bill into law, affirming the President’s commitment to access, equity, and opportunity to all Nigerians. Together, we laid the legislative and executive foundations for what has become a new era of inclusive tertiary education in Nigeria. In my address, I also encouraged our universities to take learn from global institutions that have successfully diversified their income through commercial ventures, research commercialization, and international student enrolment. But we must also confront the deep structural issues: unethical practices, lack of global competitiveness, outdated teaching methods, and poor infrastructure. Reforming higher education is not just about money it’s about standards, partnerships, and courage. Let us build universities that can compete globally, inspire students, and contribute economically. Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the Annual Public Lecture at Osun State University, Osogbo on the invitation of the institution’s leadership. The lecture titled “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global Versus Nigerian Perspectives.” A topic that could not have come at a better time as we try to fix our tertiary education system I underscored a central truth that though education in my opinion is a fundamental human right and not a privilege , it can also be very expensive. In Nigeria, where over 1.9 million young people apply to universities annually and more than 130 public universities operate across the federation, the old funding model is no longer sustainable. That is why, during my time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, I sponsored and led the passage of the Interest-free Students Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act 2023, a transformative piece of legislation aimed at ensuring that no capable Nigerian youth is denied a university education solely because they cannot afford fees. And in one of his earliest acts as President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a strong believer in education signed that bill into law, affirming the President’s commitment to access, equity, and opportunity to all Nigerians. Together, we laid the legislative and executive foundations for what has become a new era of inclusive tertiary education in Nigeria. In my address, I also encouraged our universities to take learn from global institutions that have successfully diversified their income through commercial ventures, research commercialization, and international student enrolment. India needs to build an alternative manufacturing system that thrives in a democratic setup. Thus, a partnership with Peru or the US could be the way forward. When it comes to education, it begins with curiosity and the freedom to think openly and ask questions without any fear or constraints—political or social. Education must not become a privilege for a few because it is the very foundation of freedom. India needs an education system that fosters a scientific temper, encourages critical thinking, and reflects the rich diversity of our nation. This is Rishi Sunak saying everything about universities that I have dedicated my platform to. Universities are OVERRATED!!! 90-95% of the students studying Microbiology, Biochemistry, Botany etc were rejected by Medicine, Nursing etc and dumped into these departments to study those courses. Students who set out to study LAW suddenly find their names on CRS, Islamic studies etc merit list. The Universities are ripping them off! They graduate from these courses and there’s nowhere they want to apply the knowledge either home or abroad. There are 1.8 million students in Nigerian universities!!! 1.8 students!!! What are they studying? Most of them become self-made WhatsApp business entrepreneurs or eventually go back to learn skills. So, 4years+x of their lives wasted gaining unnecessary knowledge all because the university wants to rip them off and their parents wants them to attend the university by “tipa tipa by fire” so they can brag. We don’t need MORE universities or university graduates, we need more vocational education institutions. We need to stop these universities from churning out empty heads with certificates and start thinking how we can train them with real life skills. Dear Bola Ahmed Tinubu for your attention.

A teacher at a DCM school in kotkapura Punjab was simply giving a lecture on women empowerment and mentioned Indira Gandhi as part of the discussion. Instead of understanding the context, a student reacted by calling her a killer and attacker, and the matter was unnecessarily escalated into a controversy with even a police complaint. This is not empowerment, not education, and definitely not progress. It is slowly pushing children towards becoming emotionally reactive, intolerant, and anti-social at a very young age. Parents and society need to understand that classrooms should remain places of learning, discussion, and open thinking not battlegrounds for ideological fights.
