A 22-year-old college kid named Billy Schmidt was brutally murdered right outside his home. He was walking back from watching the NBA Finals when two black men tried to rob him for his phone. Billy chased them, and one coward black man shot him in the chest. He died at the hospital. No arrests yet. This senseless killing in South Philadelphia shows how out of control black men’s street crime has become. Hard-working young people can’t even walk home safely anymore. 100 Black men of Baton Rouge inducted 2 white elected officials this year, one is up for reelection against a Black man. Does that make them 98 Black men this year? I have a simple question for the community. Is it appropriate for a Black organization to admit a sitting white district attorney in the same year he’s being challenged by a Black member of that organization? If the DA has served 18 years without joining, why now did he join now? Does the timing matter? When we ask ourselves why it’s so hard for Black people to win parish-wide and statewide elections in Louisiana, I simply challenge you to look at the actions taking place in front of you today. I read in the comments that some followers can’t take reading bad news anymore. I get that. I do. Is there anything good about this situation? Hard as it may be to believe, but there is. No electricity means no internet. And without the internet, people spend less time on social media and more time with their families and friends. People visit each other - even if it's to wash their clothes or cook some food. They go outside more often. They talk to their neighbors and to other people around them - because together, it’s easier, supporting one another when it matters most.
