Today, CNBC released a new video with Consumer Reports comparing driver-assist systems. But there's a problem… in the video, they used Tesla's Autopilot, not Tesla's FSD (Supervised), and compared that to the top offerings in other automakers' cars. CNBC also claimed that Tesla lacked an effective driver monitoring camera, but Tesla does have one—so much so that some Tesla owners complain about its sensitivity. Camera based driver attention monitoring is less strict for Autopilot than it is for FSD (Supervised). Not once in the video did they test the latest version of Tesla's FSD. Consumer Reports says Ford and GM have the best driver assist systems. The Mercedes system they praise in the video is extremely limited and can only work on highways. I tested Xpeng's VLA 2.0 in the streets of Beijing, and it is comparable to my experience of daily driving Tesla FSD v14. Xpeng is not charging $100 a month to drive this. It is inlcuded in its higher-trim vehicles and it already caught the attention of Volkswagen, which is going to integrate into its own vehicles - something Tesla hasn't been able to do despite trying. I installed comma in my car Their tagline is “make driving chill” which is accurate! I have pretty good confidence relying on it to drive most of the time, feels way “chiller” than Tesla autopilot (I haven’t driven the new FSD) It’s awesome that you can self install (~30min) a $1450 device with 3 cameras from a company of ~20 ppl and mostly be able to let it drive for you. It taps into the cars existing driver assist system and takes it over. There are a bunch of different forks; I’ve been using Sunnypilot. It’s not plug and play and there is stuff to figure out but it’s INCREDIBLE what this little device and small team can do. It’s actually quite disappointing that it just isn’t built into most cars.

This is my favorite Black Skimmer video because it perfectly illustrates the beauty of flight and this bird’s mastery of it and its environment. Watch how it makes a full 180-degree turn using its tail while keeping its head perfectly stable and its eye on the prize. It’s hard for me to fathom the amount of thinking that even goes into this process, and yet the Black Skimmer does it all on autopilot. What an amazing animal.
