CBC's Lyndsay Duncombe did a piece on equalization for the National, interviewing Trevor Tombe and Tegan Hill of the Fraser Institute, but pretended the math and formula is complicated and hard to understand. It isn't that difficult. Quebec keeps domestic hydro rates artificially low through Hydro-Québec, which slashes its measured fiscal capacity and inflates its equalization payments by billions Meanwhile, Duncombe omits that Quebec deliberately suppresses other resource development (oil/gas exploration limits, etc.), further reducing its own-source revenues—yet provinces like Alberta get full clawbacks for actually developing theirs. Quebec polls show that they are open to both resource development and pipelines Conveniently omitting that crucial detail from the national broadcast is once again giving Alberta separatists ammunition. When President Trump says reciprocal tariffs - he means reciprocal tariffs and if Alberta leaves Canada the tariffs will be zero for Alberta and zero for the USA. They will be wide open for American banks and financial institutions. AND - Alberta won't have Ottawa doing everything they can to shut down oil production for the benefit of Communist China.

At the same time Quebec takes in huge sums of taxes from the rest of Canada through a rigged equalization formula that gives Quebec over $13 billion every year in “equalization”. This despite Quebec having a comparable economic strength to British Columbia, which is forced to pay into equalization. Quebec gets to hide their #1 source of natural revenue (Hydro) from the equalization formula, making them poor on paper only. Quebec also gets extra Canadian taxpayer cash for… 💰Immigration 💰Heritage 💰Culture 💰Languages 💰French only government jobs 💰Corporate bailouts 💰SNC Lavalin contracts across 🇨🇦 Meanwhile Quebec demands the rest of Canada shift away from oil & gas to Quebec approve clean energy. Quebec has spent $228 billion on foreign oil between 1988 - 2020. For a government that said they would eliminate trade barriers, Mark Carney is not only helping block Alberta oil going to Quebec, he is then racking up new debt to offset those oil imports for the fictitious climate change agenda. The idea that 42 million people in Canada are responsible for global temperatures or can even change the temperatures by a fraction of a degree, is absurd. So why do so many Canadians pretend we can?$

Meanwhile, Blanchett tells Alberta to “stop drilling” and “transition” our economy which is easy to say from a province with no production and plenty of revenue. Let’s have honest federalism: if you rely on Alberta energy, don’t vilify the people who produce it or the province that helps pay the bills.
