Met with DCM Shri DK Shivakumar today to discuss alternatives to the Tunnel Road Project. Expressed our opposition to the project, as it is not a sustainable solution and would not effectively address Bengaluru’s traffic congestion. An 18 km car-centric road is an impractical and unfeasible idea that would only worsen congestion and harm the environment. Urged a shift in focus towards Mass Rapid Transit Systems to truly decongest Bengaluru. Suggested a comprehensive vision with: - A 300 km Metro Rail network (3-min frequency) - ⁠314 km of Suburban Rail - ⁠Modern trams for short-distance commutes This rail-based backbone can help shift over 70% of commuters from roads to rail. Also proposed adding 5,000 BMTC buses, introducing BRTS on ORR, strengthening BMLTA with a full-time Chairman, and launching a mission-mode program to repair and standardize roads and footpaths for a walkable Bengaluru. Recommended a Special War Room to ensure timely Metro completion. Will continue to oppose the impractical, car-only Tunnel Road. And if you think the ongoing flyover extension from the airport side to Baptist Hospital will fix the jams — wake up. In the next 2 years, BDA will likely be back to the drawing board. Every evening, commuters spend 25–30 minutes just to exit towards the airport and beyond — whether on the main carriageway or service road till Gangenahalli. Soon: South Mumbai–Thane in just 25 minutes MMRDA has commenced construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a 13.9 km, fully elevated 6-lane high-speed corridor that will dramatically reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to 25–30 minutes, while easing daily congestion on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH)—one of Mumbai’s busiest arterial routes serving lakhs of commuters every day. The corridor will run from Anand Nagar, Thane to Chheda Nagar, Ghatkopar, with key links at Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd and Ghatkopar. In Thane, the corridor will merge seamlessly with the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road near the erstwhile Mulund Octroi Naka, forming a continuous high-speed route. From Coastline to Connectivity, Shaping Mumbai’s Landscape Inspected the ongoing work of the 'Mumbai Coastal Road Project North' today, reshaping a faster, greener and better-connected city. Designed to provide seamless connectivity from Nariman Point and Marine Drive to the western suburbs, Bhayandar, Thane, and beyond, this landmark project aims to reduce traffic congestion, travel time, and pollution. This corridor will also be extended up to Virar and the Vadhavan Port, Palghar in the future. Travel time from Versova to Dahisar is expected to reduce from 120–140 minutes to just 15–20 minutes. Additionally, an elevated connector from the coastal road to the upcoming Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) will further strengthen Mumbai's transport network. The Mumbai Coastal Road North (MCRN) Extension from Versova to Bhayandar features innovative engineering elements, including double elevated roads, roads on stilts in mangrove areas, 2 cable-stayed bridges, 4 basket-type bridges, twin underground tunnels, and 10 interchanges. Spread across seven packages A, B, C, D, E, F, and DBLR, the project covers 26.32 km of main road and 32.94 km of interchanges, connectors, and ramps. The project is expected to create employment opportunities, lower vehicle operating costs, and support regional growth, with an Economic Rate of Return (ERR) of 11%. Sustainability is central to the project, with a strong focus on carbon neutrality, while the CM War Room closely monitors progress to keep the project on schedule. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 48%, contributing significantly to a cleaner urban environment. Girl Student’s Clip Exposes Bengaluru’s Broken Roads, Missed Classes and Injuries Today morning, Bengaluru witnessed yet shocking incident: a school bus toppled over on the Panathur–Balagere stretch. The reason? Our “world-class” roads riddled with potholes, craters, and poor maintenance. Fortunately, the students managed to escape through the back door, but the incident could have been far worse. Soon after, a video surfaced from another group of students travelling in their own school bus. In it, they spoke about the deplorable condition of Bengaluru’s roads and the ordeal they go through every single day. According to them, they spend more time bouncing around in buses than sitting in classrooms, thanks to endless traffic jams and delayed schedules. Their extracurricular activities are postponed, their study time is cut short, and their safety is constantly at risk. The irony? While making the video, their phone actually slipped from their hands not because of negligence, but because the bus lurched violently over yet another pothole. With the recent approval from the Federal Executive Council, I am pleased to announce that Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) will undergo major upgrades to transform it into a world-class facility. The upcoming developments include: 1. Rehabilitation and Expansion of Terminal 1 (T1): As our busiest terminal nationwide, T1 will undergo extensive rehabilitation. This includes upgrading the exterior façade, interior finishes, plumbing systems, and mechanical and electrical installations to meet international standards. 2. In an key move to enhance commuter safety in Outer Ring Road (ORR), the administration will be rolling out a comprehensive set of robust and proactive measures. As part of this initiative, a crucial coordination meeting was held on Tuesday at the TGICCC, chaired by Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS. Transport Department Commissioner Sri Ilambarthi, IAS, HMDA Urban Forestry Director Sri VSNV Prasad, IFS, along with representatives from NHAI, GHMC, HGCL, and IRB Infra, as well as Traffic DCPs and Additional DCPs from the Cyberabad, Malkajgiri, and Future City Commissionerates, participated in the meeting and held extensive discussions. Initially, representatives from the ORR maintenance agency, IRB, gave a PowerPoint presentation detailing the measures currently being implemented for road safety. Speaking on the occasion, Hyderabad CP Sri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, emphasised that rather than reacting after an accident occurs, many lives can be saved through proactive preventive measures. He instructed that utmost priority must be given to road safety on this route, which witnesses an average daily traffic of 2.80 lakh vehicles. Noting that an average of five to six accidents are currently occurring every day, he urged the officials to work in coordination and take steps to bring this number down to zero. He suggested that violators of traffic rules should not only be issued challans but also be provided with special counseling. Furthermore, he recommended that safety messages should be sent to the mobile phones of commuters as they enter the ORR. The CP directed officials to take measures to reduce response times during emergencies and recommended utilizing the services of traffic marshals if necessary. He made it clear that vehicles must not be stopped on the ORR under any circumstances, except in the event of a breakdown. If stopping is unavoidable, commuters must immediately inform the helpline, ensure adequate safety precautions, and park the vehicle exclusively in the extreme left lane. Analysing the statistics from the past four months, he pointed out that 33% of accidents occurred due to drowsiness/sleep deprivation, 25% due to reckless driving, 15% due to overspeeding, and 14% due to tire bursts. He explained that these accidents could be prevented by creating extensive awareness among motorists. He also advocated for data driven safety enhancement measures and implementing a safety ranking protocol for expressways. Through open dialogue, fair rehabilitation, ITI upgradation, skill training and a dedicated fisheries institute, we are committed to ensuring that the people of this land, our tribal communities, our fishermen, our youth, are not just witnesses to this progress but its primary beneficiaries. Also inspected the ongoing construction work and reviewed the project layout of the Boisar Station under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. Work is progressing well and officials have been instructed to maintain pace and quality within the decided timelines. Once operational, Boisar will connect to BKC in under thirty minutes, opening up this entire region economically. This is a project that will genuinely change the character of Palghar. Also reviewed the site of the proposed offshore Airport in Palghar district, which is going to be India's first offshore airport. This project adds a critical third dimension to this connectivity picture. Situated in proximity to the Dedicated Freight Corridor, the Bullet Train, the Uttan-Virar Sea Link, the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway, it will significantly improve connectivity while easing the growing passenger load on Mumbai Airport. The pre-feasibility report has confirmed the site as viable and the DPR has been ordered today. Also discussed the MMRDA-developed Narangi Creek Bridge, a ₹850 crore, 4.10 km project that will directly connect Vasai-Virar with Saphale, Palghar and Boisar, reducing travel distance by nearly 40 km and travel time by around 45 minutes. Also held detailed discussions on the Uttan-Virar Sea Link, a proposed six-lane project worth approximately ₹58,754 crore that once complete will directly connect to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway, making travel between South Mumbai and Ahmedabad faster, safer and more convenient. Inspected the construction and reviewed progress on the Vadodara-Mumbai section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of India's most ambitious infrastructure undertakings. A defining feature of this 8-lane greenfield corridor is its direct connectivity to JNPA, enabling faster, more efficient and cost-effective freight movement from North India and giving a major boost to the country's logistics chain. It will also offer a reliable alternative to the congested Thane-Bhiwandi-Ghodbunder routes, with travel time between Vadodara and Mumbai set to reduce from 8 hours to approximately 4 once complete.
