Stellantis closing the Luton factory is devastating for the 1,100 workers. It’ll be convenient to blame this on the ZEV Mandate, but that isn’t the full picture; after all Luton doesn’t currently make an EV and it exports most of its production. It’s down to a combination of headwinds (including Chinese EV competition) the European auto industry has been facing and we musn’t roll back progress being made with EVs although I would support greater flexibility on the annual targets.

April, 2020. Gavin Newsom gives a no bid, billion dollar contract to a Chinese electric vehicle company to manufacture and deliver face masks to California. When speaking about the deal, Newsom would regularly try to mislead people into thinking the masks were being manufactured in America. "Through a consortia of nonprofits and a manufacturer here in California." In this video, Rachel Maddow accidentally calls him out. The company that Newsom gave the contract to had never made any masks or PPE equipment before. BYD is a Chinese based company and the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world. The company is notorious for producing low quality products. Due to its reputation for faulty products, close ties to the CCP and possible ties to forced labor, the first Trump Admin barred BYD from bidding on federal contracts. In 2023 Newsom visited BYD headquarters in China and advocated for their vehicles to be sold America. It's fair to think that Newsom and BYD have something going on behind the scenes. Shamelessly, Newsom recently criticized Trump and Elon for ceding space in the EV market to China, even though he's been the one advocating for China to be able to sell more vehicles in America.

We have retained a sense of calm and given free vaccine to all the citizens, but still that fiscal deficit of 9.3% has been brought down. Huge signing bonuses, salaries several times higher than the average wage, and massive compensation payments to families if a soldier is killed. It allowed the Kremlin to recruit volunteers while keeping life in Moscow and other major cities relatively normal. But Jamison Firestone argues that model is beginning to break down. According to his analysis, Russia has burned through much of its wartime financial cushion. Its National Wealth Fund has shrunk dramatically, the government has piled huge liabilities into the banking system by forcing lenders to finance defence companies, and the flow of volunteers is no longer keeping pace with battlefield losses. If that's true, Putin faces a problem money alone can't solve: Manpower. Jamison believes Russia may soon have little choice but to launch a major mobilisation, and that's where the real political danger begins. Putin's unwritten deal with the Russian people has always been simple: Accept fewer political freedoms and in return, I'll give you stability, security and a comfortable life. The energy storage system achieves an ultra-large capacity of 10 MWh within a space equivalent to a 20-foot container, BYD said. For a 1 GWh storage plant, it will cut the number of required units by more than half, reduce land use by one-third, and trim cell count by 76%, according to the manufacturer. It uses BYD’s self-developed 2,710 Ah Blade Battery cell, which the company claims is the largest energy storage cell in the world. "This next-generation cell delivers three times the capacity of conventional storage batteries, boasts a cycle life of over 10,000 cycles, and reduces the total lifecycle cost per kilowatt-hour to below $0.014 – a milestone that could reshape the economics of large-scale storage." BYD says it can cut project-level levelized costs (LCOS) by 21.7%. For a typical 1 GWh installation, total costs related to equipment procurement, transportation, and installation are expected to drop by around 30%. In addition, BYD has launched its new GC Flux grid-forming inverter solution, which covers the 2.5–10 MW capacity range. According to BYD, the inverter boasts a performance level approximately 38% higher than common industry standards and a maximum power density of 1,474 kW/㎡, which is around 130% above typical values in today’s market. The system provides an overload capacity of up to 3x for 10 seconds and reaches a peak efficiency of 99.35%.

China is a prisoner of geography. Its energy pragmatism is in direct response to choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait of Malacca and the first Island chain through which it’s vital liquid hydrocarbon imports, 12 million barrels of oil per day, must traverse. It is extremely vulnerable to blockade and has organized its energy policies: its massive coal fleet, impressive solar build out, EV dominance and coal to chemicals industry accordingly. Its energy pragmatism is in direct response to choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait of Malacca and the first Island chain through which it’s vital liquid hydrocarbon imports, 12 million barrels of oil per day, must traverse. It is extremely vulnerable to blockade and has organized its energy policies: its massive coal fleet, impressive solar build out, EV dominance and coal to chemicals industry accordingly. #Ethiopia is the first country in the world to ban imports of non-Electric Vehicles (EV), since January 2024. It’s now building an advanced EV charging infrastructure. The country has one of the world’s cheapest electricity costs per kWh. Almost 100% of Ethiopia’s energy is clean, green and renewable all sourced locally from hydro, solar, wind, etc. Yesterday I visited a sleek new ultra fast charging station (video) capable of fully charging EVs within 15 minutes. It was installed by Ethiotelecom (the country’s largest telco), on the side of a newly rebuilt very modern ten-lane highway, in the capital city Addis Abeba. The entire charging process is efficient and hi-tech with payment via a mobile phone app. A large number of new EVs can now be seen on Addis’s streets. The vast majority are Chinese such as BYD. There are also European and Japanese brands such as VW and Toyota but made in China. Have seen several Teslas including a Cybertruk. An emerging market African economy showing the world the innovative future of EV transportation. Very impressive! As the saying goes: Necessity is the mother of invention and innovation. In the case of Ethiopia, the innovative EV strategy was necessitated partly due to the fact that the country is a net oil importer to the tune of up to $6.0 billion annually and, in some years until recently, exceeding the country’s entire annual merchandise export FX earnings.

The United States has 296 ships in its fleet, while China’s is on pace to surpass 400 ships this year. Despite the U.S. Navy’s goal of increasing the size of its fleet, in recent years the number of ships has been shrinking....... China’s largest state-owned shipyard, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, built more commercial vessels by tonnage in 2024 than the entire US shipbuilding industry had since World War II. This reflects the declining shipbuilding capability of the US, which currently has only four active public shipyards compared to China’s 35 sites. The U.S. is increasingly relying on its key Asian allies, South Korea and Japan, to help revitalize its struggling shipbuilding and repair capabilities, leveraging their advanced maritime industries to counter China's dominance. Currently, all vessels passing through are being stopped at an area controlled by Iran. A complete barricade has been erected there. The area has been completely blocked. Because of this, vessels carrying petroleum products and gas are unable to reach the region. Therefore, there is a gas shortage here. If the gas supply is not adequate, we anticipate that the entire Morbi Ceramic Industry will have to be shut down." (03.03)
