The Chinese PLA Southern Theater Command recently dispatched a naval task group headed by Type-055 guided-missile destroyer #Zunyi (Hull 107) to conduct training exercises in the waters east of the Philippine Luzon Island. The training exercises focused on live-fire drills, air-sea coordination, rapid maneuver, and replenishment at sea, aiming to test the troops’ joint operations capabilities. The training exercises are necessary operations carried out in response to the current regional situation, and are fully in compliance with international law and practice. This marks a significant milestone as it is described as the world’s first destroyer configured to carry intercontinental-range missiles, specifically through integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile system. The Zumwalt-class was originally designed for naval surface fire support with advanced gun systems, but those were removed during refits starting around 2023–2024. The ship is now being repurposed for hypersonic strike capabilities. The CPS is a conventional (non-nuclear) hypersonic weapon system, featuring a two-stage solid rocket booster and a Common-Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB).
