Elon Musk explains how data centers in Space could help the US compete with China in AI “Given that Chinese AI companies are doing as well as they are with a relatively small amount of compute, it seems that if they had a lot of compute, there’s a good chance they would be the leaders. The constraints on AI are essentially electricity and AI chips. China is very strong in digital AI, and it has far more electricity than the United States. In fact, China already has more electricity than the United States, Europe and India combined. The US government can prevent US companies from using Chinese models, but it can’t stop the rest of the world from using them. That won’t stop China from becoming the leader in AI. Where are DeepSeek and other Chinese AI firms going to be getting their chips over the next 5 years? Jordan Schneider says that without Nvidia hardware, they're just not going to be able to keep up. "There's this ratio between the US semi ecosystem and the China semi ecosystem. The capacity is like 15:1. "And you can project that out pretty clearly, doing some math around how much capex is being spent, how much equipment is being acquired, yield rates, etc." "So where is [DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng] going to get the chips? Ask any AI CEO why they need half a trillion dollars in data centers. They have one answer. If we don't do it, China will. Do you want China to get AGI first? Here's the problem. America already has ten times as many data centers as China. The race is not close. And ask yourself a simple question. If you could have free water and electricity or free ChatGPT which one do you pick? You need water to live. You don't need ChatGPT at all. The fear of China is not analysis. It's a fundraising strategy.

The idea is that anything we are working on, anything that we are investing in, needs to be built with the assumption that sometime in 2027 China is going to move on Taiwan. I might be wrong on this. It might be a longer. I think that it is very likely that China moves on Taiwan for a variety of political reasons. If you had to ask me, it’s more likely that they don’t do a full-scale invasion to start. It’s much more likely that they do something like a blockade. I worry about them kind of boiling the frog. They’ve got one port, and then two ports, and then the airports, and then the people of Taiwan are running out of money, running out of food. You boil the frog enough, there’s never a point where Taiwan really wants to fire the first shot and actually start a war. Boiling the frog… I think is what China will do with Taiwan.”
