Jay Johnson on the lesson he got from Chris Petersen on modeling the standards you expect from your players. “If I want my team to be more mentally tough, then I need to be more mentally tough.” The standard has to apply first to the people who set it. Every standard you set for your team creates a corresponding standard for you. If you want disciplined players, lead with discipline. If you want consistent players, lead with consistency. For some of us alcohol is an escape from uncomfortable feelings that we have about ourselves, or an escape from just feeling uncomfortable in the presence of others. The true work in sobriety is about being comfortable as yourself. When you start to genuinely like and accept who you are, you no longer want escape yourself or create someone new to serve others. Anyone that’s on this journey , I just want to reassure you that if you put the work in, really start to better yourself, really start to understand what it is you feel uncomfortable about yourself , as your self-esteem and self-respect grows so will your ability to truly be yourself and not care who likes the true version of you, because you like yourself and that will be enough. The culture your players experience is often a reflection of the culture your staff experiences. Hitting starts WAY before getting into the box. Below are 6 steps that will lead to more consistent hitting… 1. I believe it all starts the night before with a good PM routine leading to a good night of sleep. Know that a great day today started the night before. 2. Have a solid pre-game routine and be consistent with it. (cage work, BP, standing in on bullpens, visualization, journaling, nap, etc.) 3. Know when your at-bat starts so you can segment the game and turn up the intensity of your focus. Is it when you’re in the hole, on deck, when you put your batting gloves on? 4. When you’re on deck, act like you’re in the box. This time is crucial to take control of your self-talk and breath, and get in sync with the pitcher. 5. Walk with big body language to the plate.
