Good players have a distinct sound when they hit the ball — a solid thump where the ball is struck cleanly just before the club takes a divot. It’s one of the sweetest sounds in golf. To create that sound, you can’t be hanging back. You’ve got to get to your lead side. I love how dumb the rules of golf are. You can’t get relief from a divot. But if standing on a sprinkler, you can get relief not only from a divot, but you can also move the ball from the rough to the fairway! Hovland right to do it, but silly rule.
