Albert Maguire received the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing a therapy for inherited retinal degeneration that became the first FDA-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease. Maguire recalled that the project began nearly four decades ago during conversations with his now wife (and co-awardee) Jean Bennett. What started as a simple idea eventually led into a breakthrough treatment that has transformed the lives of patients around the world.

At an Appropriations hearing to review the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) budget, I pressed the NIH Director on the Administration’s proposal to cut funding for biomedical research. These cuts would result in a nearly 40% reduction in funding for the National Institute on Aging, which supports most Alzheimer’s research. As progress is finally being made with early detection tools and treatments that can slow Alzheimer’s disease, now is not the time to slash funding. Through my role as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding to support lifesaving biomedical research.

Confirmed: The United States completely destroyed a vital scientific and academic center in Venezuela, located in Miranda state. On Saturday, January 3 at 1:57am, facilities of the Mathematics Center of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) were destroyed in the U.S. bombing attack of Venezuela. The Center is part of the National University of Sciences Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán. The attack has been described as ‘total’: these areas housed servers and essential equipment for computer networks that were completely devastated. Two missiles directly hit the area, leaving fragments that show imperial hatred against Venezuela's sovereign technological development. In addition to the completely destroyed Mathematics Center, four more research centers of the Institute were affected: the Physics Center, Chemistry Center, Ecology Center and Nuclear Technology Unit These spaces have been fundamental in training the professionals who support health, engineering and oil sovereignty. Since its inception in March 2021, in response to PM Narendra Modi's clarion call for a SuPoshit Bharat, the Poshan Tracker has emerged as the largest nutrition surveillance system in the world, enabling real-time tracking of health-related Govt schemes and driving transparency & efficiency at the grassroot level. It has profoundly improved maternal and child health across the nation. Congratulations to TEAM Ministry of WCD for this well-deserved recognition, and kudos to everyone who has been part of this transformative journey.
