What caught my attention in this video is important: the clothes the person is wearing looked very familiar to me. After going back and checking, it became clear that he is the same person who appeared in photos, with the same stains on the clothing, that were published by the Israeli army, claiming he was one of the fighters they arrested while escaping through a tunnel in the Jneina neighborhood in Rafah. This means one of the two narratives is false… or both: either the Israeli narrative, or the narrative of the Abu Shabab militia. This further documents and confirms the military cooperation between the two sides. For this reason I have always doubted the Israeli narrative regarding the besieged fighters in Rafah. They planned on going to another bar, when they went outside the same men followed them outside. As soon as that happened, a woman came up to them, she looked worried and came up to them and pretended to be a friend of theirs that they haven’t seen in a long time. When they were out of ear shot of the men, she leaned in and told them what was going on. She invited them to go and hang out with her crowd so they could leave safely through the back. After enlisting, I entered a world where bad choices carried immediate consequences. In "Troubled," I ask this question: Did the military transform me in some dramatic way, or did it simply remove the possibility of misbehavior? Maybe it was not so much that the military did something for me as that it prevented me from doing certain things. You live on a military base, surrounded by people paying attention to what you do. It is difficult to make a serious mistake or a self-defeating choice. So much is on the line whether your on or off duty. Fail a drug test and you can be court-martialed and sent to military prison. Refuse to show up for work and you may face the same outcome. In the civilian world, I began to notice what was happening to some of the friends I had graduated from high school with. They stayed in our home town. Some drifted through community college and wasted a lot of time. They had no structure, no oversight and no one keeping track of them. After enlisting, I entered a world where bad choices carried immediate consequences. In "Troubled," I ask this question: Did the military transform me in some dramatic way, or did it simply remove the possibility of misbehavior? Maybe it was not so much that the military did something for me as that it prevented me from doing certain things. You live on a military base, surrounded by people paying attention to what you do. It is difficult to make a serious mistake or a self-defeating choice. So much is on the line whether your on or off duty. Fail a drug test and you can be court-martialed and sent to military prison. Refuse to show up for work and you may face the same outcome. In the civilian world, I began to notice what was happening to some of the friends I had graduated from high school with. They stayed in our home town. Some drifted through community college and wasted a lot of time. They had no structure, no oversight and no one keeping track of them. In 1943, Black American soldiers arrived in Lancashire.🇬🇧🇺🇸 Back home, they couldn't eat in the same restaurants as white people. Couldn't drink in the same bars. The locals didn't care about any of that. They said come in. Same pubs. Same pints. Same welcome as everyone else. They danced together. Drank together. Walked through the village together. One soldier said he didn't know he was coloured until he looked in the mirror. Then the US commanders tried to stop it. They demanded the village separate them. Every pub refused. A barmaid called Gillian Vesey served whoever was next. No exceptions. Military police walked into a pub and tried to arrest a soldier for wearing the wrong uniform. A British soldier stood up. "Why do you want to arrest them? They're not doing anything wrong." That night, things turned violent. A soldier was killed. The commanding general blamed the white officers. Racist officers were removed. The soldiers went home. But they carried something with them. The memory of a place that treated them like people. One veteran said: "These soldiers were never going back to accept being treated as less." "None of us were." A small Lancashire village showed them what was possible. Not by marching.
