Count Binface, and how British satire protects the establishment. There’s a tradition in Britain of only breaking our stiff upper lip to smirk at some twat who’s standing for election dressed like he’s going to run the London Marathon for charity. Count Binface is the latest one, and he’s... the sole candidate (notwithstanding a few other cranks such as Piers Corbyn) running against Nigel Farage in Clacton. The usual excuse for novelty candidates is that they give voters an opportunity to make a protest vote against the establishment. But in this case all the establishment parties (the Tories, Labour, the Greens, Lib Dems) aren’t fielding a candidate. Count Binface IS the establishment candidate. He’s played by regime comedian Jonathan David Harvey, an Oxford graduate who according to his CV has written for BBC comedy shows such as The Thick of It, Have I Got News For You and Yes Minister (blimey, he must’ve started young). British satire has always been an establishment controlled release valve. Like the illusion of opposition media in Russia it’s there to give a facade, a reassurance that there’s some sort of democracy, but in reality it’s an establishment tool used to attack insurgents. Count Binface is welcomed onto every establishment news channel (even ones who refused to platform Reform), always with the same smirky smirk, and he’s celebrated by smirky establishment politicians. Over the next few weeks in the run-up to the election in Clacton, I’m going to get sick of establishment goons smirking, and I’m going to get very sick of Count Binface.show more

Two weeks ago I booked tickets to see Count Binface performing live in London, which seemed like a quirky fun thing to do 🗑️ Then Nigel Farage and the media furore happened, and somehow I randomly ended up being the only journalist in the audience last night at the sold-out gig (many journalists had begged to attend to no avail, apparently) 😅 The veteran journalist John Sweeney John Sweeney interviewed him live on stage in the style of Jeremy Paxman and then it was opened up to the floor. Overall, it was a very funny gig - John Harvey seemed to view the whole week is rather surreal. I think some of the best material he’d planned for the gig he’d already used on air, so he was literally ad-libbing satire on the spot based on what questions he was asked, which is pretty impressive given that the room was also not air-conditioned and so we were all sweating in close quarters for an hour and 20 minutes. I also met one of his supposed supporters, who has been funding him at the rate of £3 a month for the last 15 years 💷 (in answer to the, “who is funding him?” question) Here are some gems from the night 💎: - Count Binface clearly really detests Nigel Farage - Count Binface pledges to put David Attenborough on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square - On the topic of AI stealing creative content and taking over our jobs, Count Binface wants to “stop the bots!” and thinks we should break into OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman’s house in the middle of the night steal his DNA to create a “Sam Altman AI” - Count Binface admits he is “weak on uncontrolled immigration” given that he is an alien that travelled to Earth to stand as a joke candidate, but he says that he is holding back the rest of the spaceships from invading Earth 🚀 - However he did admit that he is an intergalactic space warrior who is bent on dominating mankind (I’m kind of up in the air about whether Clacton should vote for him now) - The Count Binface helmet does come with some sort of cooling device, but sadly he left it in the dressing room last night before the gig 🫠 - Overall Count Binface said that he just really cares about democracy, and he doesn’t think we should count on him to become a member of Parliament or any other kind of statesmen. The latest is an investigation into £5 million received from a Bitcoin billionaire. I'd like to see the Labour politician who can turn down five million quid. In fact I don't remember Labour agonising over the ethical implications of receiving £11 million from unions, the conflict of interest in receiving £6 million from energy tycoon Dale Vince, or the dodginess of receiving £4 million from a Cayman Islands-based hedge fund. They've ramped up the harassment as well, with journalists staking out Farage's daughter's home. No wonder nobody wants to run against the establishment. Farage called a by-election to draw a line under these matters and the establishment parties - the Tories, Labour, Lib Dems, Greens - are all boycotting the vote, creating an inverted cordon sanitaire. Would be nice if they could do that at the general election too.

You only get to ask questions they want to answer. That’s how you get an invite as a journalist, don’t ask the hard questions. Perfect example of how the establishment media and the establishment politicians behave. It’s all a stage. Housing for young people is one of the most important issues of this election.

MacFarlane: I think it's an anti-establishment era we may be entering here. Look at all the different ways in which people are bucking against establishment. Kids are more distrustful about academia. They're concerned, if not scared of AI. Independent media is flourishing. People want to defy the establishment. I don't think this is a Democratic dynamic. I think there is cynicism, if not fear of establishment right now. And if Abdul El-Sayed is somebody who channels people who don't want the establishment to run and to reign, he's going to have a big night moving forward.

Former Kevin McCarthy is quitting Congress. He’s essentially saying if he cannot run the place as Speaker, then he will leave. There’s an Establishment Exodus from the House Republican Conference. It’s my hope that we backfill these establishment entities with folks who are willing to fight for the America First agenda. But for all of the self-congratulatory videos that McCarthy may make, his unwillingness to stay and vote for even the most basic Republican priorities until the end of his term may imperil our ability to get the job done.

This is where the political class has dragged us: a country so exhausted by managed decline, broken promises, donor politics and manufactured leadership contests that the man with a bin on his head is treated as part joke, part protest vote, part constitutional possibility.
