He could have ejected immediately. He didn’t. On May 14, 2009, RAF Harrier GR9A ZG478 crashed during landing at Kandahar. The approach was too steep and the jet struck the runway hard. Its landing gear collapsed, sending the Harrier into a 4,000-foot belly slide as its fuel, weapons and... pods caught fire. But the pilot stayed with the burning aircraft. Why? Four aircraft were waiting on the runway. He steered the crippled Harrier away from them before ejecting as flames reached the cockpit. He survived with minor injuries. The Harrier was destroyed. No enemy fire brought it down. This was a landing accident that became a fight to keep a burning aircraft from taking others with it. Watch the final seconds. 🇺🇸 A plane crashed into the ocean near a beach in North Carolina. A light aircraft had technical issues, and the pilot decided to make a water landing off the coast of Oak Island. Eyewitnesses: "it seemed like it was landing, then it crashed and tilted." The pilot was thrown from the cockpit, rescuers managed to swim to him and bring safely him ashore. The man was hospitalized with bruises and abrasions.

As the pilots make small corrections, the rudder moves left and right to help keep the aircraft pointing straight. Now imagine the pilot who was landing the Fly Dubai today making those same landing corrections with part of the rudder torn away!! That’s why the incident makes the damaged rudder so striking. The 737 MAX that diverted to Tabuk was later photographed with part of its rudder missing after its rapid descent.

He made an approach from runway 29, and then he carried out a missed approach, after which he again tried to make an attempt from runway 11. I also have no contact with the pilots; they are not there. It is a very unfortunate decision. We are very sad about it. We are trying to first be with the families who have lost their next of kin. It is a very unfortunate incident. Primarily, it appears that the pilot could not see the runway...He was a very experienced pilot, more than 16,000 hours of experience. The co-pilot also had 1500 hours of experience. The Captain was very experienced. He was with Sahara, JetLite, Jet Airways and he was very experienced on this type of aeroplane also...The aircraft was very well-maintained. There was absolutely no problem in the aircraf, there was no technical failure in the aircraft as far as we know...My deepest condolences. Captain Sumit Kapoor was a very good friend of mine. He was a brother to me. His son is also a pilot with us. Captain Shambhavi Pathak was a daughter to me. Both of them were extremely good human beings and extremely good pilots..." During the crash landing, a part of the aircraft hit a light pole before the aircraft crashed onto the ground. An E145 Jet made a bad landing yesterday which lead to the destruction of the plane, everyone got off safely, but a passenger posted video showing the landing and evacuation. Must take some resolve to just keep recording as the plane is scraping along the runway on fire. Looks like the plane touched down short of the runway, a situation that was likely incompatible with keeping the landing gear attached.

As the U.S. Marine Corps sundowns the AV-8B Harrier II after more than four decades of service, the legendary “jump jet” enters the final chapter of its operational life. With the Harrier now retired from U.S. service, the Harrier’s story is not completely over: the type remains in service only with Italy and Spain, where the unique STOVL aircraft continues to fly. To mark the USMC Harrier Sundown, here’s a 14-minute video that brings back one of my most memorable flying experiences: my flight aboard an Italian Navy TAV-8B Harrier. You can read more about that mission here: Unmistakable and iconic, the AV-8B remains one of the most fascinating combat aircraft ever built. This is my tribute to a legend that, for a little while longer, still refuses to disappear from the skies.

In June 1937 at Neuhardenberg, pilot Erich Warsitz (posibly the first jet pilot) ignited the von Braun Liquid Fuel Rocket Engine on his Heinkel He 112 after climbing to altitude and shutting down the Jumo piston engine. Smoke and fire quickly filled the cockpit due to exhaust flowing back into the fuselage. Despite the wheels-up landing and having the fuselage on fire, it proved to official circles that an aircraft could be flown satisfactorily with a back-thrust system through the rear without causing an aircraft to flip or become uncontrollable. It convinced the German Air Ministry (RLM) that rocket-powered flight was feasible, leading directly to the development of the purpose-built Heinkel He 176.
