The pre-release version of Crimson Desert reviewed by Digital Foundry on PS5 Pro had some significant dips in framerate in optimized mode which targets 60FPS. This happened during a combat sequence where you have tons of enemies and NPC around you. As Digital Foundry suggested this is a sign of a CPU-bottleneck from the Zen 2 architecture on the PS5 Pro. When they tested out Quality mode, it had a locked 30FPS with little to no dips.

Another day, another odd and old-school technical issue in #Nioh3. This game doesn’t just expect the frame rate to hit its FPS cap to work properly, it also wants the FPS to line up with the display refresh rate. Using the 60 fps cap at 120Hz (or higher) can result in lots of frame-time spikes and microstuttering. the only way to avoid this is to switch the refresh rate to 60 Hz, which gives a much smoother frame time graph. Frame Generation on top of a 60 FPS base at 120 Hz works flawlessly without any frame time issues.

In my previous post about the #Nioh3 demo, I mentioned that when the game isn’t consistently holding 60 FPS or 120 FPS, several issues can show up. Here’s a clearer breakdown of what's going on. The main reason is that the game speed and physics are tied to the frame rate. When you enable the 120 FPS cap, the engine start overreacting and pushes CPU usage very high, even if the game is still running at around 60 FPS (as shown in the first example). In the second clip, you can see the uneven, jittery camera movement I mentioned before. Notice how much smoother 60 FPS and 120 FPS look compared to the unlocked side. Also, camera movement at 60 FPS is slightly faster than at 120 FPS. In the third clip, player movement is slower when the frame rate is unlocked. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it shows up often enough to be noticeable. Because of how the Katana Engine behaves, the game is clearly designed around 60 FPS. Running at 120 FPS is possible, but it’s only recommended if your system can maintain that target almost all the time, which isn’t easy to achieve. There’s also an alternative workaround where you select the 60 (locked) option and enable Frame Generation (DLSS or FSR 3), as shown in the last clip. The downside is that DLSS Frame Generation tends to show the same stuttery look as when the frame rate isn’t holding a fixed target, likely due to Reflex keeping the frame rate slightly below target. FSR Frame Generation, on the other hand, looks much smoother and works better here.

Battlefield 6 open beta runs up to 55% better fps on PS5 Pro vs PS5 in performance mode, while also having "substantially better" image quality using PSSR and higher average resolution too. Meanwhile, Metal Gear Solid Delta runs fairly poor on both consoles. But while PS5 Pro's performance mode runs at PS5 quality settings, plus better GI too, embarrassingly it has worse overall framerate performance and worse image quality (though IQ is better in motion). Metal Gear Solid Delta is poorly optimised on all platforms and it's disingenuous to use it as indicative of typical PS5 Pro advantages. Even in its infancy PS5 Pro's often delivering on Cerny's target of it achieving PS5 30fps mode like fidelity, only at 60fps. Numerous tentpole games this year show sizeable improvements. Battlefield 6 Beta - "Substantially" better IQ and up to 55% better fps than PS5 in performance mode. Assassin's Creed Shadows - Generationally tansformative RTGI/fidelity mode settings, but at 60fps. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 - Fidelity and graphics settings of PS5's 30fps mode, but at 60fps. Death Stranding 2 - Near locked 60fps with similar IQ and fidelity as PS5's 30fps mode. Monster Hunter Wilds - Far superior image stability and more consistent 60fps vs PS5. As someone who bought a PS5 Pro at launch, I can absolutely say it's been worth it for me, and I'd struggle to go back to the base system. There will always be outliers like MGS Delta, but they don't represent typical improvements PS5 Pro generally brings. Much like PC releases with issues like shader compilation or traversal stutter, or more general bugginess vs console counterparts, it would be unfair to use those things as indicative of PC gaming performance improvements in totality, or to conclude all PC gaming hardware is a scam lol. Path Tracing on PS5 Pro even as a demo and at 30fps, pretty much confirms at least some games will use PT on PS6, which I said months ago but some said I was crazy for suggesting. PC gamers won't want to admit it, but next-gen the gap between console and higher end PC may shrink in terms of real world differences, bolstered by more competent RT and AI upscaling tech in the next-gen consoles. Keep in mind Valve already confirmed what Steam data already showed, that "the steam machine is equal or better than ~70% of what people have at home", and the Steam Machine is reportedly similar in perfomance to the BASE PS5. In regards to PT in F1 on PS5 Pro, I say drop the base resolution further (there's examples of PSSR 2 looking great even at 864p) and give us 40fps or higher. Also, this is a reason the future/RDNA4 RT tech and custom AI hardware in PS5 Pro was noteworthy. The "2-3x" PS5's RT performance Cerny quoted clearly wasn't just PR bluster. Outside of this demo, it's already allowing WAY better RT than PS5 in some games (Cyberpunk, F1, AC Shadows etc), with better image quality and/or perfomance to boot. Such demo's show there's potentially more to extract, especially for quality modes. #PS5Pro #PS6

Here is the whole fight and some info about the run! Total Deaths in the run: 685 (x2). 35% of those were to Radahn. 55 deaths were to gravity! Maximum heart rate was 166 BPM, crazy high. The final build was level 194 with 60 vigor, 54 endurance & strength, 40 faith and 33 mind. I was using a Giant Crusher with Prayerful Strike. Talismans were: Crimson Seed Talisman +1, Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, Shard of Alexander and Golden Braid. I was using Holy Shrouded Cracked Tear and Opaline Hardtear in my flask.

When I saw that Assassin's Creed Unity was getting a 60 FPS update for current gen consoles, I honestly could not wait to see it with my own eyes. And after playing it, I realized it is not just 60 FPS. The game also seems to be upscaled to 4K, which is absolutely insane in my opinion and the game runs incredibly smooth! Many of you know that I have never been the biggest fan of Unity. But I have to admit, maybe it is just placebo, yet it genuinely feels like the game plays better. Almost like the controller responds more precisely to what I actually want to do. I tested it properly in stealth and of course in parkour, and I have to say, it feels amazing! For PC players this might not be anything special. But for someone like me, mainly playing on console, finally being able to experience Assassin’s Creed Unity at 60 FPS is a game changer. And by the way, co op also seems to be working normally again. This is honestly crazy to see!

The addition of Displacement Scale options in Crimson Desert is very welcome as it can help reduce shadow flickering, or even eliminate it in certain scenarios. Here is a quick video I did, first few seconds with Displacement Scale set to High, and then to off. The shadow flickering behind the lanterns as well as all over the building completely goes away. I also gained around 1ms in frametime, so it provides a small fps boost too. I havent seen any downsides of setting it to Off yet. Even the curtains in tents look a lot cleaner with less artifacting and flickering.

There are two things worth pointing out about upscaling in #AssassinCreed Black Flag Resynced. 1. Incorrect resolution scaling with Balanced and Performance modes: Using Balanced or Performance with any upscaler causes the game's Resolution Scale (output resolution) to drop, which also lowers the internal render resolution. As a result, these modes apply incorrect scaling and the image quality is noticeably worse than it should be. For now, the workaround is to set the Resolution Scale to 100% and manually adjust the Max Dynamic Resolution (internal resolution) to match the expected scaling for Balanced or Performance mode. 2. The game defaults to the older DLSS 3 CNN model: By default, the game uses the older DLSS 3 Preset E. While it's still a fine option, it doesn't match the image quality of the DLSS 4 Transformer model (Preset K) or the newer DLSS 4.5 (Preset L and M). So I highly recommend forcing at least Preset K through the NVIDIA App (or another tool). Even on RTX 20/30 series GPUs, with Preset K, you can maintain the same performance as before while getting better image quality by using a lower upscaling mode, like Balanced instead of Quality. Hopefully Ubisoft Support fixes the scaling issue and adds an in-game option to choose between DLSS 3, DLSS 4, and DLSS 4.5.

My early impressions of SAROS after beating the first region. • Gameplay feels tight and fluid as expected • Crystal clear visuals with PSSR 2 and a smooth 60 FPS • Story is much easier to follow with a stronger narrative overall • Difficulty is for sure more accessible than Returnal so far but the first boss was still intense and took me a few tries. Again, still very early (I have a feeling that was just the tutorial). • Permanent progression is a welcome addition. Even if you die, you're still making progress towards your character so you can come back stronger. • Skill tree has everything from flat stat bonuses, to new abilities, and modifications to existing ones • Big fan of the art design, the eclipse looks really cool • Great soundtrack and excellent 3D audio • Dualsense features are incredible, holding the trigger halfway gives each weapon an alternate fire mode #SAROS #PS5

In the same game, you will have different looking outputs for every different upscaler because these AI models wont be trained on the same data. Grace in this case here, will look different on an Nvidia GPU using DLSS 5, she will look different using FSR, PSSR or XeSS. You get the point I don't why but I always felt that DLSS was always supposed to provide only one thing, give gamers a better framerate while retaining the same image quality as native resolution. Borderlands 4 has a certain art style that doesn't look like it needs these kind of settings to be turned on to play at a high framerate but sadly it does and you can defend this if you want but the future of gaming looks bleak, using this tech to not optimize the games further will just result in input latency increase as every game will be delivered with frame-gen turned on in the devs mind.

Borderlands 4 Performance Summary in 2 minutes: 0:00 - Native Res Badass Settings the game runs bad 0:30 - Upscaling Performance Mode Badass Settings, the game barely manages to hit 60FPS 1:20 - Frame Gen turned on and now you have 100 FPS Some people will turn all these settings on and be happy with it but in my honest opinion these are used as crutches to make the game look as if it performs good. China is making another world-class wonder! It’s building a new high-speed railway into Xizang!!! The Sichuan-Xizang Railway is the most challenging railway project in human history. You can’t imagine how difficult to build a railway in such a harsh natural condition: The starting point of the line is only 300m above sea level, while terminal Lhasa is over 3,000m above sea level. The Nyingchi segment alone requires 47 tunnels and 121 bridges. One of the most challenging segments was the Milin tunnel with 10km length. The railway is tunneled through areas with high-temperature earth-crust. Factors like large temperature differences between day and night and severe weather are all challenges that China has to solve. And we made it!

Did FPS games peak in the 90s? I guess the newer ones have better graphics, but do they really "feel" better in terms of gameplay and fun? Unreal Tournament (Epic Games, 1999) was one of the best of its kind. A favorite for our LAN sessions back in the day. Carrying a 21" mintor over to your friend's house felt a little less heavy when you knew you'd be playing Unreal later that day... Exellent and colorful graphics (even on PCs that weren't high end, like those you needed for Quake III Arena for example), great sound, and your typical capture the flag or deathmatches - I mean, what more did you need? Plenty of "Game of the Year" nominations (with some wins), the highest critcal acclaim, and massive sales numbers. I think we can all agree that Unreal Tournament belongs in the Hall of Fame of FPS games. Or maybe I am just getting old and gloryfing things from the past too much.
