Asked about Microsoft’s relationship with the Israeli military, Smith said: “The vast majority of what Microsoft does for the Israeli military is protect the cybersecurity of the state of Israel… That is our primary focus. There are some other activities as well. That involve the use of Azure for storage for example, for processing of data.” On August 6, The Guardian, with +972 Magazine and Local Call, revealed that Israel’s Unit 8200 has used Microsoft’s Azure cloud to store and analyze massive volumes of Palestinian phone call data — one of the largest surveillance systems ever built for a civilian population. The data was then used to plan airstrikes on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. In a letter published later, he explains his journey of political awakening and condemns Microsoft for its direct complicity in “ethnic cleansing” and “crimes against humanity.” Lopez said he initially tried to stay informed and take small actions—donating, signing petitions—while continuing his work at Microsoft.
