This World Cup has shown how Argentinian players are just built different, and it was interesting because, in the press conferences, both managers addressed this. First, Tuchel talks about the Argentinian value of the ball and how they protect the ball at all costs, how they manage those small spaces, and how they learn this from a young age. He references culture, and this is exactly it. A child playing in a certain environment leads to that. Not every Argentinian child is on the national team, but it raises the ceiling. It creates a certain type of style and a certain type of player. Then Scaloni also references his culture. He sees them play without fear of losing. It comes from playing in an environment where you are constantly faced with the potential of losing and being able to play with that pressure, right? They don’t fight against it. They play with it. They use it. And I think this is where youth football coaches should really take note. This does not mean we should copy and paste Argentinian culture into every training environment, because culture cannot just be copied. But the values within that culture can be inculcated in every training environment. The value of the ball. The courage to receive it in small spaces. The ability to protect it under pressure. The confidence to keep playing after a mistake. The willingness to play with the possibility of losing rather than constantly trying to avoid it. Those values can become part of the environment we create every day. They can be present in the games we design, in what we praise, in what we allow players to struggle with, and in how we respond when they lose the ball. If every mistake leads to the coach stopping the session, giving the answer, or taking the pressure away, then players never learn to play with that pressure. They learn to wait for the coach. It was cool to see how two managers, at such a big stage, reference culture and the environments that kids play in when they’re young. Because the players we see on the biggest stage were not only created by tactics or coaching information. They were created by environments that taught them what to value, how to relate to the ball, and how to play when there was something to lose.

Or in military terms, you could say the objective is to hit the target. For a start, the AI has to be obedient, that is it has to actually do the things it is programmed to do, whereas a human is fundamentally disobedient, especially when being creative. When a human plays chess, they are performing a completely different kind of computation. They don't do the same things, they don't investigate the same possibilities that the artificial chess playing machine does, because the artificial one is capable of looking at billions and billions of possibilities, whereas the human can only look at hundreds or something. They are doing something completely different. Another difference is that the human can explain, can write a book later, having become world champion, can write a book saying how I did it, as the computer program that beats the world champion can write no such book, because it has no idea how it did it. It was just following a program. I was doing this and that and that and none of that is illuminating. Also, third thing, the chess player can decide I don't want to play chess anymore, from now on I will play Go or from now on I will play tennis. If commanded to play chess, the functionality will deteriorate completely. Those things are different. What is your analysis of this? 🗣️ Xabi Alonso: I think Arda has the ability to play at different heights on the pitch and to have different kinds of influence, depending on what the team needs. He has a very good touch, he knows how to organize the play, and he also knows, in the decisive phase - when you're already in the final third - how to give the final pass, and even arrive a bit from the second line. The goal against Valencia came from a run he made, and then he crossed to Kylian. It depends on what we have around him, on the players next to him. He can adapt, and that quality gives us flexibility in our game plans. But Arda is growing a lot, and I think I said it at the Club World Cup: we need to invest a lot in Arda because he is a special player, a different player. 3 Reasons there aren’t more Black Head Coaches in the NFL. -Circumstance -Comfortability -Access It’s not a coincidence. The NFL Head Coaching fraternity is hard to break into with the amount of great coaching candidates, nepotism and back scratching that occurs that makes it tough for former players to break into the profession and climb to positions that are coveted for Head Coaching jobs. Often times owners and front office executives want to hire the people who are the best for the job, but are also the ones they are most comfortable with because they look like them, have the same or similar life experiences so they connect better with them and who they want to go golfing with. BUT ACCESS is the issue that has clear examples of how black players don't get the same treatment in coaching circles. That’s not an opinion. It’s a fact. Take a look at Quarterbacks after they finish their playing career. Some go from playing to QB coach to Offensive Coordinator to head coach conversations quickly. The fast track is real for some players. Kellen Moore went from playing to QB Coach to Offensive Coordinator in 2 years after retiring and became the New Orleans Saints Head coach 8 years after retiring. Kevin O’Connell went from playing to coaching in 2015, was an OC in 4 years by 2019 and the Minnesota Vikings Head Coach in 7 years by 2022. FAST TRACK Philadelphia Eagles OC Sean Mannion and Washington Commanders OC David Blough both went from playing to NFL Coaching staffs and OC in 3 years. FAST TRACK. We’ve seen Black quarterbacks go into coaching in this same pipeline like Byron Leftwich who became an NFL coach in 2016 as a coaching intern and was the OC of the Buccaneers by 2019. But despite winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady, he never got a chance to be an NFL Head Coach. Why? Did he bomb the interview? Or was he just not in the right circumstance, where he made the right people comfortable or had the proper connections to determine his access. Right now if you are on Sean Mcvay's staff you are a walking head coach in waiting. All 4 of his last OCs are head coaches. -Liam Coen -Mike Lafluer -Matt Lafluer -Kevin O'Connell Because they were the best men for the job, great coaches, had the right circumstance, made the right people comfortable, and had the right conections to get access to the job. Seneca Wallace, Jason Campbell, Cleo Lemon, Randall Cunningham. Why didn't they get the same opportunity after their playing days? It’s not just a coincidence. Maybe they didn’t want to be a coach because of the long 20 year cycle they would be presented with to get to the top of the profession that is standard for most. But if you told any of them they would be an OC in 3 years or less and a Head Coach in 8 years or less. ALL OF THEM WOULD TAKE IT. But they never had access to that Fast Track pipeline. The NFL cant say we want the best leaders’ while recycling the same leader profile. And if the NFL is truly a meritocracy, then the pipeline should reflect merit, not comfort. Not ‘who looks like the last guy we trusted.’ Not who gets the benefit of the doubt for being associated with family lineages. In a league that is 70% black, the leadership should be more representative of the leagues players. There are qualified Head Coaching candidates of all skin colors. They just want a chance to succeed or fail just like their competition when their resumes clearly say they have earned it.

Nick Saban has always asked this question about Leadership... "How many guys on the team need to be led?" Coach Saban believed in the power of Collective Leadership with his teams. 1. Are most players on your team bought in? 2. Do most players on your team set a good example? These players do not need someone to impact or influence them if they are already making these choices and leading by example. This is the power of collective leadership. Collective leadership is vital to successful teams. I believe there are 7 types of Collective Leaders that all teams need: 1. The GAMER - When the game is on the line. Who does the team look to? Who wants the ball in their hand? It is the Game Leader. They don't "have" to lead in other ways, but it would be best if they did. This player is often the ultimate competitor on the team. 2. The WORKER - Winning Teams have Practice Leaders. They bring energy and focus to each practice. They ensure competitive and strong practices. They Lead by Example. You practice much more than you play. 3. The GATEKEEPER - This leader ensures the Team Culture is Maintained. They put out the fires. They keep the team accountable. Especially when the coach is not there. They are essential in WINNING Teams. 4. The COMMUNICATOR - It is a long season. There will be difficult days. Teams need the Communicator to get through these tough days. They often provide humor and can lighten the mood. They have high Emotional Intelligence. This is an Underappreciated Leader. 5. The CONNECTOR - These players are often your “glue” players. They keep the team connected on the court or field as well as in the locker room and in social settings. 6. The ENERGY GIVER - The Energy Giver brings Positive Energy Every Day! Their Energy is Contagious! This leader knows that nothing great can be accomplished without Enthusiasm. The Energy Leader brings positive energy each day. They feed the team! 7. The SERVER - Finally, the Server embodies Servant Leadership. They are all about the TEAM. They bring a WE-first mentality to all they do. Their focus on the TEAM creates a contagious WE>ME mentality throughout the team. Pedro Franceschi explains why Brex doesn’t hire “people managers” anymore One day Brex founder Pedro Franceschi made a list of all of the leaders at the company who worked and didn’t work. “I was trying to find what was predictive of leadership success,” he explains. “A lot of things are important, but they’re not predictive. For example, being customer obsessed is important, but there are people who were customer obsessed who were on both sides of the list.” The only trait that Pedro found to be predictive of leadership success at Brex was what he calls “the ability to operate at all levels” — someone who even at the highest levels of leadership has a deep understanding of the details of execution at the individual contributor level. What this means in practice is a CTO who is actually a great engineer. A Head of Design who can actually design amazing products. And a great Head of Sales who can actually go and close deals themselves if they need to. “It doesn’t mean that they’re going to do that all the time,” Pedro explains, “But it means that they know the nuances of what makes someone great at the craft… If you don’t know how to identify greatness because you don’t know what the bar is yourself, there’s no way to build a team that’s great.” He continues: “A lot of companies develop this role over time that people call a ‘people manager.’ They’re Director of Engineering but they can’t really code because they manage people now… And that concept is just something we eliminated. Looking for a last minute gift for your kids, your nieces, nephews, whatever… Here’s how to give them the gift of Bitcoin. When I was a kid, my aunts and uncles gave me Treasury bonds. But my parents had to hold them, nobody remembered where they went, and of course… they ended up being basically worthless. But giving Bitcoin isn’t that easy either… here’s the issue with Bitcoin gifts: 1. Kids under 18 can’t legally have a River or Swan account. 2. Hardware wallets are like a hundred bucks, so that makes no sense if you’re giving less than that. 3. And little kids don’t even have phones. So here’s what I did instead. STEP 1 I downloaded a basic Bitcoin wallet app and created a separate wallet for each kid. STEP 2 I sent about $50 of Bitcoin into each one. STEP 3 Each wallet has its own seed phrase. I printed it out and the. I gave one copy to the parents, and I kept one backup. STEP 4 Then I printed the public address QR code, put it in a small picture frame, and hung it on their wall. So now they can scan it anytime and see their Bitcoin growing… but nobody can spend it. After that, I deleted the wallet app completely. The Bitcoin only exists via the seed phrase. And every birthday, Christmas, Easter or whenever… I can just send more Bitcoin to that same address. They watch it stack up for years.

A 4-year-old child has seen 50x more information than the biggest LLMs. Yann LeCun is the Chief AI Scientist at Meta. He recently spoke on “The Expanding Universe of Generative Models” panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Yann highlighted the idea that a 4-year-old child is way smarter than current cutting-edge large language models (LLMs). “Think about what a child sees through vision. Put a number on how much information a 4-year-old child has seen during their life. It’s 20 Mbps going through the optical nerve for 16,000 wake hours in the first 4 years of life. 3,600 seconds per hour is 10^15 bytes. This is 50x more information than the biggest LLMs we have. A 4-year-old child is way smarter than these models having acquired an enormous amount of knowledge about how the world works.” The real constraint right now is the ability of LLMs to think. Today, LLMs are only capable of System 1 thinking. System 1 vs System 2 thinking was popularised in the book 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' by Daniel Kahneman. System 1 tasks involve quick, instinctive, automatic responses. LLMs struggle with discontinuous tasks that require a creative leap in progress as they imitate human responses. It's hard to go above human response accuracy if LLMs are only trained on humans. Models are building the track in front of them with each word being generated. What could it mean to give language models System 2 thinking? This remains a future development I'm excited about.
