Cursor CEO Michael Truell on the future of writing code: "Our goal with Cursor is to invent a new type of programming." "It looks like a world where you have a representation of the logic of your software that does look more like English." "You can imagine kind of...

This material is solely for educational purposes and is not investment advice or an offer of investment advisory services. This material should not be used as the basis for an investment decision. a16z is an investor in SpaceX and Cursor through its managed funds, and thus has a financial interest in the company’s performance and future prospects. In particular, a16z benefits if the company grows in value; and a16z funds will receive any customary dividend payments in connection with their status as a shareholder of the company. However, a16z is not being compensated by SpaceX or Cursor for this material.

"Evolution toward pseudocode" is really the specification becoming the program Write what the software must achieve, the system synthesizes it. Tau Language does this now. The next layer up is a spec that reasons about its own and future rules. That's the actual frontier.

is right. A few months ago I asked what super high level languages might look like for AI and for us. We must move past the plateau of abstraction provided by current programming languages to a higher abstraction based on intent. "Intent will be the key concept of super high level languages."

Building with Claude Code daily, the English spec works until specifics show up. Test coverage thresholds, retry budgets, and memory layout decisions all collapse into vague English the model has to guess at. COBOL and SQL both made this same promise. English can carry intent, but structured representations still own the constraints.

I was a loyal user of cursor. I upgraded when I saw they were advertising Fable 5. Access was immediately halted. I requested a pro-rated downgrade they refused. Saying 'not our model not our problem'. That's like a cafe running out of beans and serving you hot water but still charging you for coffee. The other providers gave a full refund with no questions asked. FUCK CURSOR.

This sounds like something that can only be said by someone who has no idea what programming is .. 🤔 I'll interpret this as just marketing hype

Shifting programming languages toward structured pseudocode sounds like the logical next step for developer productivity. Removing the syntax friction will allow engineers to spend more time designing robust software architecture and less time debugging typos.

AI should no longer code, coding languages are just interference at this point. It should build.

Interesting to see this thesis gaining mainstream attention. Cursor is launching Origin this fall. Meanwhile, @gitlawb already has agent-native repositories, OpenGateway, OpenClaude, decentralized nodes, thousands of repos, tens of thousands of agents, and real usage happening today. The most interesting part isn't the announcement. It's how many companies are now moving toward a future Gitlawb has already been building in public. @pmarca

lol Codex already achieved this, and Cursor has been copying them (poorly) all year. It's no contest. They need a radically new approach if they have any shot of being relevant, even after the SpaceX acquisition *(especially after).

If this happens, reading software becomes more important than writing software. That's a big change.

SpaceX acquiring Cursor is Elon building a direct answer to Claude Code and Codex using the tool developers already loved. OpenAI and Anthropic both have a problem now.

The most interesting impact is organizational. AI makes small technical teams more capable, which changes how companies think about hiring, product velocity, and capital allocation.

Cursor didn’t build any groundbreaking AI model themselves. They’re literally a fork of VS Code with Claude and OpenAI models nicely wrapped on top. At its core, it’s just a fancy wrapper. Nothing revolutionary. But the market is so hyped for anything AI-related that these guys are sitting on a crazy valuation. People are throwing money at them like there’s no tomorrow. The founders are barely 25-26 and already billionaires. It’s classic hype. They’re selling a well-packaged product, not a new invention. The valuation feels completely disconnected from reality.

AI is changing the software engineering craft. Anders Hejlsberg (Anders Hejlsberg) - creator of C#, TypeScript and industry legend - on why code review needs to get more enjoyable in response: #1 - AI is shifting the craft from writing code, to reviewing code: "In a sense, we're all turning into project managers. We can have an army of junior programmers, called agents, that will just spit out reams of code but someone's got to have the big picture and review all of that. And so, increasingly, our craft is going from one of writing the code, to one of reviewing the code and building the architecture of the code and overseeing the work. It's a different kind of craft. It's a different kind of enjoyment. I've always liked writing the code. To me that was the fulfilling part, seeing it work. In a way, AI robs a little bit of that, because I am less interested in reviewing code." #2 - The code review experience should be improved: "I think we could also make the process of reviewing code much more interesting than it is today. I mean, today, you see a list of diffs in alphabetical order and now it's up to you to make heads or tails of it. There are more pedagogical ways of presenting that. And you could have commentary generated by the AI that tells you what the changes are and whatever, and then tries to guide you along. So that symbiotic relationship, I think we need to work on that more and to keep the enjoyment in there."
