Always make room for passing cyclists from behind. That’s rule number one in Denmark. Most bike lanes are much more narrow

Couldn't the same argument be made for driving side-by-side, as a reason to double the lanes for autos?

Talking like that is also how you end up hitting a pedestrian.

Dane from Copenhagen here. Riding side by side is perfectly fine, as long as you make sure to check your rear frequently and get your ass into single file so you don't obstruct other cyclists. Insisting on "socializing" by blocking the path is egotistical and bad manners.

If you want a chat there are proper places for that sort of thing. As a pedestrian I don't want to get hit by a cyclist who's not paying attention because they're chatting.

As someone from the Netherlands this post only raises eyebrows. Is this a topic? Where? And for fuck sake, why? Riding your bike with friends or family is just the coolest thing.

As a daily cycle commuter i find the lack of self awareness incredibly obnoxious. Your primary goal is safety, yours and others, then it's a sense of safety. Its nice to talk yes, not in a complex urban setting though

In Copenhagen the lanes are wide because biking is one of the preffered means of transportation. They are not designed This Way to make it easier to socialize. On the route depicted we have app. 40.000 cyclists Per day making rush hour quite chaotic when the lanes were narrower

Also, if you need to overtake, use your bell to give them a signal. Its not rocket science....

I tend to catch up with friends in cafes, restaurants, pubs, the cinema, football matches etc, which seem more suitable than when riding a bike, where concentrating on other 'road users' and pedestrians seems more appropriate behaviour.

Roses are red, violets are blue, if you build protected bike lanes, you can have this in your city too.

In a bike lane- ok. Blocking a road with 35 mph - not ok.

A bike path is not a chat room, it is to transport you from A to B, do you want to socialize, get off the bike and sit in a park or on a bench.

As someone who used to bike to work for years in Copenhagen, this must have been taken outside of rush hour or someone must have blocked the lane for all the annoyed racing bikers waiting to pass these two 😁

But in that case you shouldn’t say that cycling is transportation as it would be more like social activity. And it also wouldn’t be true that bike lanes occupy less space than car lanes.

Little and Large cycling side-by-side towards me on the pavement. They didn't like being stopped & told to get on the road.

It doesn't matter how wide the cycle lanes are. No fucker uses them.

I was reading German bike rules/etiquette recently, and it discouraged riding side by side. It's sad that their infrastructure doesn't encourage it in the same way infrastructure in the Netherlands does.

My human behavior is driving by myself not stuck in traffic. The problem isn't people, it is the lanes.

Imagine me planting myself in the opening of your building door, blocking people coming in and out while lecturing you that ‘the problem isn’t me, it’s the building’. Meanwhile no one can enter or leave because I think it’s ‘human behaviour’ and perfectly fine to stand in the way
