Data Centers are coaching their workers on how to lie to the public and their family about how Data Center water usage is actually a good thing “I work at an architecture firm that mainly does data centers, and just to give you all an idea of how out of touch the people making these things are. Today we had a meeting where we were essentially asked to defend the water usage of data centers to our friends and family in conversation at the dinner table or online. They provided them with a graph to break down water usage (included) but I’ll go over it The chart compares “domestic water usage” (toilets, sinks, etc.) for a typical-sized closed-loop data center of 600,000 gallons per year against other things of “equivalent square footage”: Cornfield: 5.85 million gallons Vineyard: 5.60 million Golf course: 5.45 million Peanut farm: 2.88 million Movie theater: 935,000 5 households: 730,000 They make the point that “Data centers aren’t the big water users you think” But that’s not really true “It's still using an incredible amount of water — and the key piece of evidence here was when someone gets pissed at a data center's water usage, ask them if they like golf. And when they say yes, let them know that a golf course uses 9 times as much water much water as a data center. A massive 18 million square foot data center is being planned north of Amarillo Texas along with a nuclear power plant to power it Cotton farmer says the Texas panhandle is the largest US cotton producing region and the water needs of the data center will wipe out the industry Many residents in the area rely on well water too which will be likely wiped out The initial agreement with the City of Amarillo supplies 2.5 million gallons per day from municipal sources under a 20-year contract They can use 912.5 million gallons of water per year This will be devastating to the people who live there and rely on this water

When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!
