And then pursue that. That’s also a good way to determine if something’s far from its optimum.” He gives rockets as an example: “You could reason by analogy and say the rocket is going to cost a certain amount because that’s what prior rockets have cost. Or you can say, well, what is a rocket made of? What are the material constituents? What do they weigh? What’s the cost per unit mass? And that sets the limit asymptotically for what a rocket can be. Labour leader Chris Hipkins says the cost of living is the main election issue. So how will Mr Hipkins address this problem? Renewable energy! So if he becomes PM, households won't see the cost of living go down. Rather it will continue to skyrocket. Simply because renewable energy is one of the major drivers of cost of living increases. The Labour leader's wrong headed thinking on this aligns with similar ideological nonsense from his socialist comrades like Keir Starmer in the UK and Tony Albanese in Australia. This dangerous and foolish obsession with falsely named renewables, driven by political ambition, greed and cronyism, has seen energy prices rise to a a level three times what they were a decade ago. If Mr Hipkins really wanted to address the cost of living, he would completely abandon renewable energy and a good start would be to discontinue the Emissions Trading Scheme. Taking close to one billion dollars from consumer's pockets every year it is driving up the cost of every household item. Including food and fuel. A simple remedy, but unacceptable to Hipkins because of his rigid ideological stance. Vote Hipkins/ Labour if you want the same economic chaos in New Zealand as you're seeing in the UK and Australia right now.

Everything in the economy runs on the same input. Compute, AI, robotics, manufacturing, transport... it's all energy underneath. That matters now because of demographics. Fewer workers every year means the economy only grows if output per head grows fast, and the engine for that is the Exponential Age... AI and robotics doing the work people used to. But all of that runs on energy. So the cost of energy is the ceiling on the whole thing. That's why the EU, Japan, China, the US and the UK are all moving at the same time. If we can take the cost of energy to near zero, GDP per capita stops being hostage to the price of a barrel of oil. That's the way out of this mess.

Elon explains how this reveals hidden opportunities: "That's also a good way to determine if something is far from its optimum. On rockets, for example, you could reason by analogy and say the rocket's gonna cost a certain amount because that's what prior rockets have cost. Or you can say: What is a rocket made of? What are the material constituents? What do they weigh? What's the cost per unit mass? That sets the limit asymptotically for what a rocket can be. So if you can figure out some creative way to rearrange those elements into a rocket shape, you can achieve a much better outcome." He shares a second source of ideas: "Combining ideas from different industries is really helpful for innovation. What have people discovered in one industry that can be applied to other industries? That's a great source of ideas." Elon also explains why he started with software: "The great thing about software or anything which just involves intellectual capital is that you and a few friends can just do it. That's why doing some sort of internet thing is great as an initial company. That's why Zip2 and PayPal gave me the capital to attempt more capital-intensive activities." He concludes: "Usually you just struggle on a solution. You try a bunch of things. Most of them don't work. Occasionally one does."
