Defections have been a big talking point since last week’s Reform UK conference. I had the chance to meet Jacob Rees-Mogg, who went down extremely well with delegates – I didn’t hear a single negative word about him. I also met Michael Gove , who hosted the Spectator magazine... drinks party, where I met and spoke with Jonathan Gullis, who in my view has been sounding more and more like a Reform UK member than a Conservative. I took the opportunity to have a real conversation with him about defecting – and about defectors in general. Here’s my view: Reform is still a young party, and of course people have to come from somewhere. What matters is that they come over for the right reasons – because they share our values and believe in what we’re building. What we don’t want are career politicians looking for their next job. Reform UK have manufactured an argument with a Welsh university. They contacted a student group at Bangor University (who are separate to the Uni) asking them to hold an event for them. When the group said "no" Reform threatened to cut their funding. This is totally manufactured faux outrage. It is the equivalent of me going up to someone and saying: “please can you host a party and can I come?” Them saying “no I don’t like you” and me saying that I am going to take their money away. Reform have repeatedly dodged interviews with journalists in Wales. They banned certain journalists from councils they run in England. I would suggest this makes this sudden desire to protect free speech nothing more than hypocritical opportunism.

"We're not going to be scorched earth Leninists... who want to dismantle and demolish everything... that is not the way a Reform government is going to operate..." Danny Kruger says those worried about Reform taking in Tory defectors or backtracking on policy are "purist" and unwilling to make "concessions to reality". I don't think it's "purist" to not want the same Tory ministers who delivered the Boriswave, and the actual Boriswave themselves, elected as Reform candidates. I think the voters are well within their rights to demand a fresh start, and accountability for what has been done to our country by the governments Kruger worked for.

Warnock: We can’t allow people to distract us, even with the ideological differences we have in our party. If you think about some of the most spirited debates we’re having in our party right now—and they are important, and I don’t mean to smooth over those debates—we’re arguing about how to help ordinary folks. I’d rather be having that argument and be in this party than the party that is focused on giving billionaires tax cuts. What I want to see billionaires do is spend a whole lot less on elections and a whole lot more in taxes.

Mamdani: I think oftentimes there's a condescension that people have when they talk about young voters and finger wag and say, you should get out there and don't ask them what would it take to bring you out here? When I talk to young people, what I hear from them, they feel like the only way they can stay in the city is if they keep living with their parents or leave the state entirely. We have to make it a place where they can aspire to dream in the city and also treat them with the seriousness that they deserve because what we'll find in our young people is leadership.

I decided on an open letter and there are two reasons I can give for this. In the first place, you have been very open about your questions. The Green Party would have you believe that hope and solidarity won them the Gorton and Denton by-election. I beg to differ. What this by-election gave us was a window into the future of the United Kingdom. A future where attempts to rig elections are no longer hidden. Where sectarianism plays a dominant role. Where the flag of Pakistan is openly waved in the streets of an English constituency. It will only get worse. They will be emboldened by this. After all, in the end, the result wasn’t even close. None of this should surprise anyone who has been paying attention. I’ve been at this for approaching eight years. Everything I have been documenting, everything I have been warning about, is exactly what you witnessed. The institutions dismissed it. The press ignored it. And yet here we are. Which brings me to the question everyone on the right is now avoiding - what does this mean for Reform? Reform need to win seats like Denton and Gorton if they are serious about the next General Election. That they didn’t come close is significant. What it tells you is that they do not have the experience to fight the cartels. You cannot parachute in PPE graduates and expect them to understand what they’re walking into. Enthusiasm is not a strategy. Optimism is not a ground operation. But this is not a counsel of despair. We know it can be done, because we have done it. In Oldham, election after election, we have faced these exact tactics and beaten them. We have defeated the metropolitan elite, the mobsters, and their bloc voting Muslim partners in 4 consecutive elections where we took out their party leaders and took the council into no overall control. By whatever means necessary, the Greens got their candidate over the line in Gorton and Denton. The tactics they and Labour used only surprised people who have never witnessed them before. We have. And we won anyway. Experience is not transferable from a seminar room. If Reform are serious, they need to start learning from the people who have actually fought this battle and not from those who have merely read about it.
