Defensively this is how you handle two runners on the same base to pull off a DP. Tag the trail runner 1st then tag the lead runner & retag him once he vacates the base. As a base runner, “ make the umpire chase you off the base.”

The runner dives a bit outside with his had stretched out and tags the side of the double first base for runners. He’s safe. But the umpire said he was outside the base path and called him out. From the Arkansas-Florida game today. With a runner on 3B tagging the Arkansas CF dekes an early catch before he really catches the ball. It triggers the Florida runner to leave early & then return to 3B to retag the base. That gives Arkansas time to throw him out at HP.

Have seen questions about why this wasn't an automatic out on Curtis Mead for running out of the basepath Rule 5.09(b)(1): "A runner's base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely."

Roberto Clemente at the age of 37 with a Massive Outfield Throw to Home Plate to prevent the runner from scoring during game 6 of the 1971 World Series It’s telling that with 2 outs, the runner on 1st, Mark Belanger doesn’t even think about scoring on a double to the right field corner. Belanger, who had good speed, was a smart enough base runner to just drop anchor at third base rather than challenge Clemente’s arm. Watching the throw, he obviously made the right decision.
