Denny Hamlin said preparations for his Kyle Busch tribute after winning Michigan began Monday, given there was a chance he might tie Busch on the all-time wins list this weekend. There was stuff to work through, including trademarks, but RCR allowed JGR to use the Busch stylized No. 8... for Hamlin's flag and hat. "I just wanted to pay my respects to someone that I really did look up to and taught me so much as a teammate. There's nothing we can say or do that's gonna make his family feel better, but at least during that little time you can pay him the respects that he deserves." Jeff Gluck joked that Kyle would've been so pissed at Hamlin tying his win mark, which got a chuckle out of the room including Denny. "He would've been pissed today, absolutely. But I would've said to him, 'you'll be around here longer. You'll get me back.'"show more

An explanation of why Ryan Preece was penalized for wrecking Ty Gibbs (and Kyle Busch was not for his incident with John Hunter Nemechek) via Hauler Talk: - In Preece's case, the biggest determining factor was audio evidence of Preece saying "when I get to that 54, I'm done with him" combined with video, audio, and SMT data. As NASCAR's Mike Forde put it, "He said what he said, and then he did what he said." - One incident that was discussed when deliberating over this incident was from Phoenix in 2023, when Denny Hamlin put Ross Chastain in the wall and then admitted on his podcast that he did so on purpose. - Preece can appeal the penalty, and there's no need for an expedited hearing given there is no suspension involved. MEANWHILE, - SMT data played a large factor in the decision on Kyle Busch's run-in with John Hunter Nemechek. According to the data, Busch was "turning the wheel all the way left just to go straight", meaning there was at least a plausible chance that Busch hit the 42 because his car was damaged and wouldn't steer - Unlike in Preece's case, there was also no audio evidence to suggest that Busch hit Nemechek on purpose - While there's no penalty for Busch, NASCAR leadership WILL discuss the matter with Busch and RCR leadership, as this is the second time in four races that Busch has taken out a competitor late in the race and "the benefit of the doubt is running out pretty quickly"

Dawson Sutton didn't smash the guitar in Victory Lane, but he had some very nice things to say about Kyle Busch. Said Kyle was one of his favorites growing up and part of the reason he got started in racing. Called him an "amazing race car driver and a great human" and admitted it's been hard to race with all that on his mind. He thinks it's cool someone shouted to smash the guitar, but he won't do that right now. "Tomorrow night, I'll think about it. But at the same time, my first NASCAR win, that's something that I'm looking forward to right now. If it does happen, we'll see what happens. But overall, I'm just praying for the whole Busch family. It's really sad." Given the choice between Busch celebrations (and how controversial the guitar smash was back then), you might see Dawson opt for a bow instead. "I think a bow would be a lot better."

Austin Dillon spoke extensively about RCR making a change at crew chief for Kyle Busch, putting Andy Street atop the 8 pit box while moving Jim Pohlman to the role Street had been working in RCR's competition department Dillon cited Street's success with Busch at the end of last year (1 Top 5, 2 Top 10s, 3 Top 15s in five races) and willingness to step up and do the job, as well as how Pohlman also "wanted to make a change" as reasons for the organization to make a crew chief change just 10 races into the season. The hope is that Pohlman can be an asset to RCR in his new role given how important what gets done at the shop during the week is and his track record of building fast cars. Dillon said there's an "urgency" in the building at RCR and that Kyle Busch himself addressed the entire shop floor this week to express that he's all-in. "He wants to get back. I've talked to Kyle, and his next win is gonna be the biggest of his career. I mean, if you think of it the right way. "All the stuff that has been said and brought up over this year, I feel like if he puts his head down and takes that team back to Victory Lane, that's gonna be the biggest win of his career. So that's what we're all fighting for. We want to see that. I mean, as a competitor, that's what I'd like to see."

During his post-race press conference, Denny Hamlin talked a little more about honoring Ned Jarrett - who drove the same No. 11 that Hamlin does now - in his interview on the frontstretch. "If you listen to MJ, he'll say that 'Cale's the original 11', right? But if you know the sport and you know the history, you know that Ned was the one that came onto the scene - and the guy showed up, he won. Didn't he win a race by like four, five laps or something?" "14 laps." "14 laps. Like, come on." Denny mentioned the relationship he's built over the years with Dale Jarrett and said he sent Dale a message following Ned's passing a few days ago. Mentioned the respect he has for the Jarrett family as well as growing up knowing Ned as a broadcaster. "I just will never forget that voice. Him and BP and all them, that's how my introduction into the past started. Just, again, very much like the Busch family, you just try to do your best to pay your respects to him in a difficult time for the family." h/t Reid Spencer

Ryan Blaney on the inspiration for his Kyle Busch tribute helmet, which he plans to gift to Kyle's son Brexton and the Busch family. "My thought when Kyle passed was - I've always thought in situations like that, how do you remember somebody and how do you think of all the good that they did in their life and all the success they had. "I think helmets are a unique thing in our sport, we kind of get to design them, a lot of them have special meaning. And this is kind of my best way of showing my respect towards Kyle Busch and respect to the Busch family. "The helmet was, I picked out - I think there's about seven or eight pictures of some wins of his, some big wins. Like Bristol sweep weekend, both his championships, his first Busch win, first Cup win, his 100th Xfinity win, his 200th NASCAR win, Brickyard win. "And each part of the helmet is that scheme that he ran on the car. That's kind of how it's broken up. So my painter did a good job of kind of getting pretty imaginative on it. "But I hope to run it for one race and give it to Brexton, the Busch family, and they can do whatever they want with it. So just showing respect, and I'm glad people noticed it." h/t Matt Weaver

seunghan mentioned jungwoo during his weverse live and said his jungwoo hyung helped him a lot when he was anxious in his trainee days 🥹🥹🤍 🍀: after the filming ended, jungwoo hyung told me ‘we should work hard and let’s do well on stage together’ 🍀: you know, it can be really tough for the trainees, especially him as a senior. but even so, he came up to me, put his arm around my shoulder and encouraged me to do well together and work hard 🍀: he got my number and i texted him first to thank him and he sent me a long message and i was really touched by that. so at that moment i really thought, ‘ah, i really need to work really hard too’ and i think that really helped me make up my mind 🍀: i don’t know how it felt from jungwoo hyung’s perspective, but during the time when i was feeling anxious, it was him who kind of held me together. he didn’t say much, but still… yeah… i was grateful~

arthur: before he (dad) passed, we told him that charles- it really gets to me, the fact that he never got to see charles as a full time f1 driver, so we told him a little lie that he was in f1 and that i was starting in f4... and it really makes me sad that he wasn't here to see charles' career, the fact that he made it to ferrari, i think he would've been so happy, but well, he's watching us from up there 🤍 [idreau]

Kyle Larson shared that the Busch family expressed their appreciation for the "Tiny Kyle" namerail in last week's Coke 600, and also that it got a good laugh out of Brexton. His wife Katelyn has been keeping in contact with Samantha Busch who shared that with them. Kyle said that he put plans in place last Saturday to put Tiny Kyle - what Kyle called him and also what Brexton calls him - on his namerail as others started putting Kyle's name or Rowdy on theirs. "I thought with Kyle calling me something different, I thought it would be a cool tribute to put 'Tiny Kyle' on there."

Kyle Busch will forever be one of the most misunderstood drivers of all time… But one of the things he taught me was if you want to lead that’s a part of it and you have to turn your back to the crowd of haters… So when we were on stage together he did that every time. My heart is unbelievable heavy for the Busch family & our industry. Rest in Love Legend. 🙏🏾

Bubba Wallace shared that he and Denny Hamlin cleared the air over the finish at Kansas earlier today. Said the conversation went well even if "the pain is still there a little bit" Wallace let on that he had an issue with Hamlin's "I won't apologize" line the day after, and expressed to Hamlin that the lingering drama created a dark cloud that wasn't fair to Wallace or 23XI when their complete focus this week needed to be on the Roval and advancing in the playoffs, a point which he says Hamlin respected. "As much as I wanted to come in here and MF the guy, 'the competitor Denny', the conversation went better than expected."

Because I felt it was at least necessary to ask, I asked NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell if there was any consideration to postponing the Coca-Cola 600 due to Kyle Busch's death. "I think it's a fair question, but when you look at what minimal conversations did take place between RCR, ourselves, family, it was - Kyle Busch would probably be pretty pissed off if we didn't race. So we're gonna honor his memory and make sure people know what he was all about."

Something that makes Daniel Suarez a fitting winner to the first race after Kyle Busch's passing: In Mexican culture, there is great reverence for the deceased. They are very family-oriented people, and Suarez gets to have his family with him each Coke 600 week. "Kyle, he wasn't my family. But he was someone that gave me a hand when I needed it most. And it wasn't just a hand. It was a hand of a legend, it was a hand of somebody with so much experience. So for that I will be forever grateful. Forever grateful. "Kyle was one of the few drivers out there that I never had an issue with. We always got along amazing. One time he got in trouble in Cancun, he called me, Samantha called me. I mean, some of you guys know what happened there. And then after the race in Mexico City, we partied together, he came to my party. "I just love the guy. He was an amazing person. And for me, one of my goals this weekend is for people to understand these stories of him. Because a lot of people didn't know who he was as a person. Many people, fans, they knew him as a racing driver. "But the person, the person that is behind the firesuit, behind that helmet - that's what counts the most. That family man. Every time that you talk to Kyle about Brexton, his eyes light up. He was a family man. And because of that, this race is so special. All the combination of these things. Hasan Piker on Tom Steyer: "If Tom Steyer straight up said Israel is committing a genocide, I would've straight up pushed for him. And he might still get in the top 2 without my aid, but he just could not commit to it. He did communicate on the issue of Israel far better than all the other candidates, but he still would not commit to saying Israel committed a genocide, and I think that literally would've dusted Becerra. If he came out and said Israel did a genocide, as a Governor I'm gonna commit to making sure we're not spending our resources on a country doing war crimes, all this stuff, I think that genuinely would've put him far ahead of the pack. Israel would've been an actual point of contention in the conversation and it would've made everybody else look ridiculous."

Kyle Busch passing away is so devastating to the racing community. He is a legend of the sport. Life is so fragile people. Tell your people you love them and give them their flowers today. Don’t wait. Kyle Busch was a fierce competitor, but he was such a great person and representative of the sport of racing outside of the car. This was Kyle Busch on March 1st. He met my entire family. He was gracious. Kind to my kids and humble. He was always this way every time we talked. We just saw him. Can’t believe he is gone. Prayers up for his family and the entire racing community. We just lost a legend.

Chandler Smith had much to say about the impact Kyle Busch had on him, as well as the many Kyle Busch Motorsports alumni in the Truck Series (and beyond), after paying tribute to his former boss with his signature bow. "He meant a lot to me in a sense of he took the time out of his day when I had questions. Not to rush me, he would sit me down and explain what I was asking and giving me the answer, and being thorough about it. "... He cared really deeply about his drivers. And the ones he believed in, you could definitely tell, because those were the ones that he wanted to really take time with." Chandler says Kyle was an amazing boss and great mentor - pointing out the KBM alumni have reached the Cup Series - and "one of the sweetest individuals that you would ever meet" off the racetrack. "We'll miss him deeply. The garage still isn't the same and it never will be."

Kyle Shanahan on Curtis Robinson: “He's really worked to get better each year, and he's a very talented guy. I think when he came here, he hadn't played in a system like this for a while. It took him a little bit to kind of pick that up, but we so believed in him as a guy and his talent level that after a year, you could start to see it clicking. He became a big asset on special teams, and last year was the first time that we really believed he was going to step in there, really contribute at linebacker at a high level. It was actually kind of a sad story, but it was about 20 minutes before he tours ACL, was the first time that I told him he'd be starting that week. It was his first start in his career, and he had earned it. We were going to move him ahead of Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles at the time. I had just told Flannigan, which was tough for Flannigan, but they were so tight, so he was happy for Curtis. Then it was about 20 minutes later that Curtis tore his ACL on special teams before he even got to a defensive rep. He was so coming in there and finally about to have his moment. Then he had that setback, which I know crushed the team for him. He's one of the most liked guys on our team, as good of a person and good of a dude as I've ever been around. He's worked for this moment, and we're excited to see him get his opportunity." via: 49ers on NBCS
