I don’t buy the idea of an early election. Labour has a huge Commons majority. Andy Burnham would be gambling that away and potentially forcing his own party into a hung Parliament. My view is that his problem is much closer to home: his own MPs.

Because an absolute shit storm is heading our way this winter. Diesel is already at £2 a litre in some places. Energy costs are predicted to rocket in January, some are predicting blackouts and power cuts. Inflation may be heading back to 4% which will crucify mortgages. Why wouldn’t he go early and try to capitalise on the Burnham bounce because everyone knows that bounce will soon fall very flat. My personal view is that mid December or early January is more likely. What do you think?

I was in Makerfield on a couple of occasions. I’m delighted Andy Burnham won the by-election and he will be a great MP and voice for Labour. Outside of Westminster, everyone I speak to cannot get their head around the idea of changing Prime Ministers now - especially after the Tory leadership chaos they voted for Keir Starmer and The Labour Party to draw a line under. It’s time to unite and get on with governing the country. 🇬🇧

So according to all reports Keir Starmer is now aware that he cannot survive in the top job any longer and is preparing to step aside. Despite claiming on Friday be would stay and fight it now seems some truth has been shared by Ministers that he cannot win, and so will step aside and set out a timetable to go. Will it be a simple coronation of the “King of the North” Andy Burnham or will there be a genuine contest with Wes Streeting. And is the process fair and right. Burnham has not been an MP for a decade. Yet now a tiny vote of just 25,000 people makes him the most powerful man in the country. That sounds like a broken system to me.
