Digger (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is Tom Cruise’s most vulnerable performance since The Last Samurai. In both films, you forget that Cruise is inarguably Cinema’s greatest action star because of his humanity. Just two incredibly raw performances that only a true actor could pull off. The Last Samurai is another exhibit that...

Tom Cruise is making a statement in Digger: Don't ever forget that I'm a great actor, not only an action star!

The Last Samurai holds up as well as it does because of Ken Watanabe. Katsumoto gives Cruise something real to react to in every scene they share.

He’s a big phony! He can’t act bc he’s too stuck on himself!

Is Digger a musical?

Tom Cruise’s performance in The Last Samurai is one of the first things I bring up anytime someone ignorantly suggests that Cruise can’t act. Cruise is quietly vulnerable in this role & his physicality and dedication is impeccable. Cruise’s nonverbal acting in this film is some of the best of his career. Don’t ever question this man’s acting chops.

Tom Cruise was snubbed by The Academy back in 1989 for Rain Man & I hope it doesn’t happen again with Digger (🌟🌟🌟🌟). Cruise is the glue that holds this entire film together & he’s in nearly every frame. The same can be said about Digger. What’s more is that in both films, Cruise has long, complicated monologues, obviously applying to Digger more than Rain Man. Both films demonstrate Cruise’s excellence as an actor.

I haven’t been this optimistic about Cinema in a minute. Another reason is Tom Cruise. Cruise’s next film Digger could be the movie that lands him his first acting #Oscar. Cruise is part of a loaded 2026 that includes Spielberg, Nolan, Denis, and David Fincher. Big year ahead.

30 Days. One month. That’s all the separates us from Tom Cruise’s next film Digger. Easily one of my most anticipated films of 2026, if not the decade thus far, because this is the first non-IP, non-franchise film from Cruise in years. There’s no way around it: Digger is one of Tom Cruise’s biggest risks. It’s also perhaps Cruise’s biggest push for a dance with Oscar in the last 25 years. Expectations are through the roof but if there’s anyone who can meet them it’s Tom Cruise. The time is now.

HBO’s Task (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a limited series I don’t think I’ll ever forget. This show earned 6 Emmy nominations last night but only won a single award - but damn it, that award was earned. Tom Pelphrey won Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series & I nearly stood up off my couch & applauded when he won last night. This show has the juice. This actor has the juice. Glad they both got some recognition last night.

Tom Cruise didn’t have to star in #Digger (🌟🌟🌟🌟). He didn’t have to take one of the biggest swings of his storied career. He could’ve used all the goodwill from Top Gun: Maverick & Mission: Impossible and done something safe. At 64, would anyone have blamed Cruise? Instead - as has been the case with Tom Cruise’s entire career - this man put two middle fingers to the sky. He said fuck your expectations of me. He said I’m making real art & I don’t give a damn who likes it. The things Cruise just did in Digger are utterly fearless. What more do you want from an artist??

Jesse Plemons makes every film better. Period. End of story. All this guy ever does is show up in films & crush it. Such is the case with his performance in #Digger (🌟🌟🌟🌟). Plemons & Tom Cruise have palpable chemistry & Plemons steals a huge moment in the film’s final third. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life watching this guy make movies.

The Last Samurai (2003) is one of those films that reminds you they do not make them like they used to. The scale, the emotion, and the performances from Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe give it a timeless, old-fashioned power.

Tom Cruise Week is underway & in full effect, which is the perfect opportunity for me to remind you all that Cruise is sublime in Edge of Tomorrow. This is an outlier film from 2014 that’s aged so, so well, not just because of Cruise’s performance or his chemistry with Emily Blunt, but because the story here is really original & the action is exceptional. If you need something to watch to fire you up for #Digger & a new Cruise performance, Edge of Tomorrow is never a bad call.

I woke up this morning with one thing on my mind: Digger (🌟🌟🌟🌟). I have no idea how Tom Cruise pulled this performance off but I’m in utter disbelief. My full review is included downstairs, but whoever you are reading this Tweet, please don’t listen to the naysayers - give this bold piece of art a shot.

Tom Cruise returns to theaters on Friday. I can’t wait. If his performance in Digger is anywhere near the things he pulls off as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder, I’m sold. I think Cruise is such an underrated actor. For all his fame & fortune, I don’t think people recognize the acting chops on Cruise. The Academy certainly hasn’t recognized Cruise’s chops but I’ll address them/deal with that issue later this week. For now? I’m basking in Tom Cruise Week.

Born on the Fourth of July nearly won Tom Cruise an Oscar for Best Actor back in 1990, but Cruise ran into the force of nature that is Daniel Day-Lewis, who won for My Left Foot. This is a painful story about the sacrifices veterans make & it’s some of Cruise’s best acting. I think the Cruise-Oliver Stone pairing is interesting in hindsight. 26 years later, Cruise might finally get that Oscar for Digger.

Tom Cruise’s next film releases in 251 days. Until then? Edge of Tomorrow should hold you over. This film is unquestionably one of Cruise’s best & definitely one of the better films of the 21st Century. Cruise & Emily Blunt have a unique, memorable chemistry that really lasts.

Matt Johnson has proven himself to be one of Cinema’s brightest, youngest voices at the moment. This guy officially has my attention. Johnson is only 40 & he’s already building a filmography that I find incredibly impressive. He knocked it out of the park earlier this year with Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie & Tony (🌟🌟🌟🌟), which I reviewed below, is even better. His 2023 film Blackberry is another notch in Johnson’s directorial belt. Wherever he goes next, I’ll follow.

Michael Mann recently commented on Instagram that he’s seen Tom Cruise’s performance in Digger & it’s amazing. Game recognize game. A reminder that Mann & Cruise have worked together & when they did…it was sheer excellence. Collateral is some of the best work Cruise has ever done. It’s also an all-time great LA film.

I woke up this morning and The Odyssey (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is still the only thing on my mind. This is the first review I’ve ever done since running this app that required two tweets. I’m still processing. Still spinning. Still on a high from what I experienced at the TCL Chinese Theatres yesterday. Long live Christopher Nolan. Long Live Cinema.

What if today was your last day? What would be the last music that you would hear? What would be the last thing that you are going to see? Tomorrow is the PREMIERE of A Good Enough Day written by, directed by, and starring the incredibly talented Trevor St. John 🌟

Every last actor in Pressure (🌟🌟🌟🌟) kicks ass. That includes Andrew Scott & Brendan Fraser, who are the primary reasons I think you should see this film- in addition to a great story. Pressure feels like a film out of the ‘90s that’s not designed to win awards or break box office records. This is just a damn good movie worthy of your time.
