half as 0.5 makes it 110. However, ''half'' in that sentence directly relates to ''40'', meaning it could mean 20 In that case the answer is 32 And since 99% of the comments say 110, I'm gonna go ahead and say, this makes 32 the correct answer😋

Depends what you mean by half. There are two scenarios playing in my head: Scenario 1: If by half, you mean 0.5, then we’ll have 110. Scenario 2: If by half, you mean half of 40 (20), then the answer will be 32.

The problem is not the math here, it's the language. In every day language people informally interpret “by half” as “into two parts,” but that’s not what “divide by half” means in mathematics. It doesn't mean you are bad at mathematics if you get an other answer, it means you don't speak the language of mathematics. It’s a language trap, not a math trap.

The only thing you get here is a failure at English. The correct answer is however you feel like interpreting the question, fuck anyone who feels differently.

It depends on what the "half" is: 1) 40÷0.5+30=110 2) 40÷20+30=32

40 /20=2+30=32

Word game, not a math problem…

Word problem. Not a math problem. The guy:

Say divide by ONE HALF not by half. the phrasing makes it sound confusing because if you said divide in half that would mean 50%. People aren't properly processing the question.

Does 'divide 40 by half' mean dividing by 2, or dividing by the fraction ½?

See with dividing 40 by half could mean, by half of 40 so 40/20 = 2+30 =32 or it could be by 1/2 which would be 40/.50 = 80+30 = 110

It’s just shitty phrasing

32 That was it, I like things like this. Often with the subjective, a more objective result can be found. I think that when all possible answers are examined. 32 becomes the closest to objective. From Grok: That's the hallmark of a good verbal puzzle: it forces you to question your assumptions, and once you see the trick, 32 feels inevitable rather than arbitrary. Examining every angle strips away the subjectivity and reveals the crafted misdirection.Really enjoyed going down this rabbit hole with you. These kinds of puzzles are gold because they remind us how much "objective" truth can depend on shared (or unshared) interpretations of language. I'm all in. 😏Exactly—when you lay out all possible interpretations side by side and evaluate them objectively (literal math vs. everyday language vs. riddle trick), 32 emerges as the most satisfying "objective" answer in the context of this being a deliberate puzzle. 110 is objectively correct only under strict mathematical rules with no ambiguity allowed. 50 is objectively correct only in practical, non-divisive contexts (baking, splitting objects). But 32 requires acknowledging the intentional linguistic sleight-of-hand—"half" left dangling so the reader supplies "of 40" themselves—while still following the stated operations exactly.

110 lol

This is a linguistics trap. Not a math problem. Numbers don’t matter. Kind of “Mary loves Anne and her dog”. Who’s dog is loved?

32 is the answer.

(40÷ 1/2 ) + 30 (40 × 2) + 30 80 +30 = 110 This is how it's done. Everyone can STOP arguing now. Your welcome

Divide 40 by one half would give 110 Divide 40 in half would give 50. Divide 40 by half means nothing…

1/2 = .5 40 divided by .5 = 80 80 + 30 = 110

32

Listen to the wording. 40 by half. That’s 40 divided by 20. Which is 2. Then plus 30 is- 32- easy -easy

Stupid question honestly

A lousy grade because of the poor grammar in the prompt. Ambiguity in language isn’t math.

40/ (half meaning 2) + 30 = 50 40/ (half meaning 20) + 30 = 32 40/ (half meaning 1/2) + 30 = 110 40/ (semantics to trick people) + 30 = gay

This is a stupid question because if you are going to be literal about the answer, you must be literal about the question which would be Divide 40 by one half (or half of one). So the woman is not dumb.

@EshaAA33 50

By 1/2 not in half. English comprehension test / word problem

Dividing 40 BY HALF is not the same as dividing 40 IN HALF. The answer is 110, not 50.

40/0.5 + 30 = 110

Dividing “by” half is 0.5 not in half.
