One of the greatest lessons I ever learned had nothing to do with running the football. One day in practice, a coach looked at me standing on the other side of the field and asked, "What are you doing over there?" My answer? "Nothing." He looked at me and said, "Then go help your teammate." He challenged me to become uncommon. He reminded me that you never know what's going to happen on the field. A teammate may go down. Someone may need help. If you only know one job, you're limiting your value. From that day on, I expanded my role. I attacked my weaknesses, learned every position I could, and became the player the team could count on in any situation. That's what made me a starter. I've carried that lesson with me ever since. Don't just do what's required. Look for ways to add value. Learn a new skill. Help someone else. Prepare for opportunities before they arrive. The people who become uncommon aren't waiting to be needed—they're already getting ready. Find A Way.

How can players make a big jump next year?!?! For High School and College players… they all put in work with their coaches. Most of them have a trainer they see to put in work. So what is the separator? 1. Are you working on the right things with your coaches that are going to help you be a better player working your team and overall 2. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU PUT IN THE GYM ON YOUR OWN. This is a HUGE SEPARATOR because this time isn’t dependent on anyone and is unlimited in how much you do. Almost every player I’ve worked with that has made a BIG JUMP has put in extra time on their own. It’s not only because of the work, but it also helps players understand their game better and gives them a bigger investment in their development. As a player you should assess that part of your development today!

This is a great example of using analytics to inform your principles of play. As you can see, the longer it is in the shot clock, the lower the field goal percentage. As a coach, you have to ask yourself, “How do I slow the other team down?” And one of the ways you can do this is by tagging up on a shot attempt. Tagging up: offensive players will crash the glass by “tagging” the player closest to them. This allows the offense, which is going to defense, to match up already. This slows down transition offenses by “choking” the ball and making it more difficult for players to throw outlet passes. It will also slow the other team’s offense down if they rely on one player to initiate their offense. 🎥/🎬: NBA

Aaron Glenn was asked if he prefers to build the team's ecosystem and then put in a young quarterback or vice versa: "I think it depends on, where's your team at right now? You always look at that. Do you have the talent or the skill on the outside, in the backfield to be able to say, 'listen, we're going to get a rookie quarterback and let those guys make plays for him.' Do you have a guy already? And usually if you have a guy, he can make the skill players look better than what they are, too. To me, it always depends on who you have. That's why I want to answer that question, because it's tough to answer just straight on."

"It is a very difficult question, because to be a great coach there are so many aspects… it is not only about tactics or results, it is about the human being as well. But on the other side, it is easier to say what makes a bad coach. For me, a bad coach is somebody who takes away the joy of the game from the players, who does not allow them to express themselves or make their own decisions. Especially at the level of development, the role of the coach is to give freedom, but not to control everything."

I've never heard of a head coach seeking out an MMA coach to learn about their communication strategy between rounds and during a fight. Really insightful. "I think communication can be distracting. I ask Eric Nicksick a lot about what his communication is during the round. There's a timeout component in communication, but also in-game communication... I think one of the hardest things in coaching is to relay, in a simple way, what you see to the players so that they could see it simply and execute. I think Eric does a great job of that." - Joe Mazzulla

Perhaps not to experience the same emotion that‘s running through their body, but to accept that emotion exists during this interaction. And perhaps not to agree with the sporting lens this player brings to the meeting but to accept it this players sporting view might be different to yours as coach. Empathy!
