Dolphin Blue is a 2003 Metal Slug-on-water-style game for Arcade/Atomiswave system Because Atomiswave has similarities to Sega’s Naomi hardware (both use the Dreamcast’s Hitachi SH-4 CPU & PowerVR 2 GPU) fans were able to back-port the game so it’s now playable on Dreamcast!

The King of Fighters 2003 was the last entry released on the Neo Geo platform, and NeoWave became the first KOF title to move to the Atomiswave hardware. It feels like SNK made it mainly to test the new arcade board, because the game comes across as surprisingly low-effort. Back then, the Atomiswave hardware was expensive, so very few arcades had it, which means not many people actually got the chance to play NeoWave. I’ve even wondered if that’s why the next game was called The King of Fighters XI. Technically, it was the twelfth main entry in the series, yet SNK skipped “XII” for the numbering at that point. It almost feels as if they wanted to pretend NeoWave never happened.

Metal Slug 6 was released during the series’ 10th anniversary year. It was also the first Metal Slug game to move beyond the Neo Geo platform and launch on the Atomiswave system. Since it came out during a period when the arcade market was already in decline, not many people seem to remember this title today. While the graphics did improve with the platform change, it doesn’t quite capture the finely crafted pixel art style that made Metal Slug 2 and 3 so memorable. In particular, the high-resolution backgrounds can feel a bit awkward because they don’t always blend naturally with the lower-resolution character sprites. The game also introduced Clark and Ralf as playable characters, along with unique special abilities for each character. A new weapon switching system was added as well, allowing players to carry and swap between two weapons. Another feature I thought was a good idea was Easy Mode, where you start with a Heavy Machine Gun by default, although you can’t access the Final Mission. It felt like a nice addition for more casual players.

After SNK went bankrupt in 2001, many of its developers moved to Sega Sammy-related companies. One of the games created by that talent on the Atomiswave platform was Dolphin Blue. One of the biggest differences from Metal Slug is its combination of 2D characters and 3D backgrounds, which blend together surprisingly well without feeling out of place. As for the soundtrack, this might just be my impression, but it feels like it borrowed a lot of the spirit of Metal Slug. Unlike Metal Slug, Dolphin Blue has a much brighter and more cheerful atmosphere, and the music fits the game perfectly. The gameplay is fast-paced and fun, but after a short while the difficulty spikes dramatically, and there are quite a few sections where the game slows down, which can hurt the overall experience. Unfortunately, it wasn’t commonly seen in arcades and was never ported to home consoles, so most people have probably never heard of it. It’s a solid game with a lot of charm, which makes it all the more disappointing that it never got the recognition it deserved.

So SNK decided to release an optimized version based on Metal Slug 2 first. That said, it wasn’t exactly the same game. They changed things like switching between daytime and nighttime backgrounds to create a different atmosphere, and even brought in some weapons that would later appear in Metal Slug 3. The controls were also improved, showing that a lot of care went into refining the experience. When you actually play it, you can clearly feel that the slowdown is significantly reduced compared to Metal Slug 2. Because of that, Metal Slug X became a very popular title alongside Metal Slug 3.

Sooo... How's our port of Sonic Mania to the Sega Dreamcast coming along!? SHE'S ALMOST DONE! We're getting ready for release!!! As you can see from these direct hardware captures, the game looks and runs amazingly on the DC! Multiple beta testers have now cleared the game on both Mania and Encore modes! Jnmartin worked his butt off finishing up the remaining effects, Michael Fadely is working on the final bit of polish, such as making sure the menu button icons show Dreamcast controller graphics, and I just opened a PR to put the gameplay code on the latest SH4ZAM commit... STAND BY FOR THE BLUE BLUR'S EPIC RETURN TO THE SEGA DREAMCAST!

Maybe inspired by the synergy between the PlayStation and Namco’s arcade-compatible hardware, Sega also developed the Dreamcast and NAOMI together to make arcade-to-console ports much easier for their own games. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Time for a status update and direct hardware capture of another high-profile AAA title coming to the Sega Dreamcast... jnmartin's eagerly anticipated port of Sonic R! As you can see from the footage, the game looks and runs phenomenally on the DC, with all of the fancy lighting from the Sega Saturn version, plus the dynamic weather system from the PC release, along with the banger soundtrack present and accounted for on the little white box of Dreams, which is now able to run it at twice the resolution, with crisp progressive-scan video display output! One of the most exciting and interesting aspects of this project is that jnmartin has taken the port to the next level and has implemented online connectivity and even internet cross-play, so that you can race against players running the game on Windows, MacOS, and Linux on your Dreamcast!

Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

After that, they moved to Atomiswave, a lower-cost version of Sega’s NAOMI platform. Some of its most notable games included The King of Fighters XI, Metal Slug 6, Samurai Shodown VI, and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum. The hardware itself was quite capable, supporting high-resolution graphics while keeping costs relatively low. However, its ROM capacity was very limited, making data compression almost essential. Because of this, even though it was a ROM-based system, it still suffered from loading times. I’ll be introducing some of these games in future posts as well, so stay tuned!

The stylish BGM that starts right from Stage 1 is excellent, and the Double Heavy Machine Gun was a really cool addition. That said, the biggest drawback is that the game feels very familiar—almost like you’ve seen it all before—which is hard to ignore while playing. In Korea, it was released around the time when arcades were disappearing due to the rise of PC cafe, so not many people actually had the chance to experience this game back then.
