Dr. Russell Barkley revealed the terrifying truth about ADHD that changes everything parents think they know: By age 5, most kids develop an internal voice — the “mind’s voice” — that lets them talk to themselves, follow rules, and control impulses. In ADHD, that voice is weak or missing...

It isn’t terrifying. Stop that nonsense. They have strengths in other areas. They have gifts. The problem is we take a one size fits all approach, which is both lazy and convenient.

@Euniqueje BULLSHIT Im diagnosed with ADHD and autism, the voice in my head is very clear… in fact, I don’t know one person with ADHD who doesn’t have an internal voice.

As someone who works in Psychiatry, I would push back on describing it as a "terrifying truth." Something to be aware of? Yes. Something to act on? Yes. But there is enough fear around ADHD already without feeding it with this kind of language.

I disagree in part. I believe it develops more slowly and is often strongly quite loud and negative, with ruminations of shame and self accusation.

Literally none of what is written here or said is true. At all.

First of all, it’s usually Autistic. Second, it’s an EXCELLENT defence against the Dark Arts of the Freudian Neurotic Analytics. Every collective needs someone with an immunity to Hurrah/Boo tactics. These kids simply learn Ethics especially when words and actions don’t match.

“Terrifying”. Its not terrifying, nobody screamed and cried. Its was knowledge - enlightening and freeing, not terrifying. If i were you i wouldn’t read the encyclopedia. At least dont do it when you’re alone in case need comforting.

BS. Maybe get some one that actually has it to make such claims. Sick of these know it alls trying to tell me what’s up. I have had internal dialogue since day one.

I question this. Diagnosed ADHD and was talking to my self at 3 - considered early. I had a strong internal dialogue throughout my childhood. Then again, I was considered a high IQ ADHD which makes it a superpower when harnessed. Low IQ, I can see it being something else. Hogwash

All of these posts tell us how awful this is and seems so doom and gloom. Yet, so many successful people have ADD/ADHD. So, tell me a solution. If all of this is true, how do I help my 15 year old son?

Is the inner voice delayed or missing entirely? At what point does the inner voice establish itself? I’ve read ADHD children are a couple years behind. True or no?

I know he’s considered “The Grandfather” of ADHD education, but his talks are so depressing, fatalistic and full of doom. Rarely have I heard him be optimistic or offer positive insight.

@grok Ethically, from a first-world US perspective, what could be done for someone with ADHD to tap their insula usage into a potential inner monologue triangulation? For example, forcing severe-concurrent ego fragmentation (Carl Jung perspective) would be unethical.

Lovely. Barkley just described ADHD. Where is the part where he describes how childhood vaccines absolutely disrupts neurons which exhibit symptoms such as ADHD and worse?

Based on what research? If a child learns language they develop self talk. If they are born deaf, they do not. ADHD does not affect the DMN or the Verbal centers in the brain. Now self restraint that is a function of the prefrontal cortex.

This would not be common except maybe in very extreme cases. What he describes is very common in narcissists.

If this is true, it just means that people with ADHD are NPCs in the simulation; they have no autonomy over their programming.

ADHD isn’t an “attention deficit.” It’s a profound developmental disorder of self-regulation. Dr. Russell Barkley (one of the world’s leading ADHD researchers) explains why the name “ADHD” has done massive damage: - It trivializes a condition as serious as autism, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. - It makes people think “just drink coffee and focus” — when the real issue is far deeper. The core problem isn’t just distractibility. It’s three interlocking executive deficits: 1. Persistence toward the future — inability to stay motivated by delayed rewards 2. Resistance to distractions — constant derailment by immediate temptations 3. Working memory — struggling to hold goals, plans, and consequences in mind Together, these create a devastating impairment in self-regulation — the ability to consciously inhibit impulses, direct actions toward yourself (self-talk, self-monitoring), and align behavior with long-term welfare. Barkley: “This is not an attention problem. This is a disorder of self-regulation… as serious as manic depression, and in its own way, as autism.” Parents often hear “he’s just lazy” or “she needs to try harder.” The truth is far more compassionate and urgent: The child’s brain is developmentally behind in the very mechanisms that allow other kids to stop, think, plan, and protect their future selves. If we renamed it Self-Regulatory Developmental Disorder (SRDD), the conversation would change overnight. How many adults do you know who still struggle with exactly these same three deficits — and were never properly understood as kids?

I just listened to Gabor Maté on Steven Bartlett’s podcast and it genuinely made me rethink everything I thought I knew about ADHD. He said it plainly: No gene for ADHD has ever been found. Not one. What gets passed down isn’t the disorder itself — it’s sensitivity. Sensitive kids feel the environment more deeply. In a stressed home (and our society is making parents more stressed than ever), that sensitivity often turns into tuning out as a survival mechanism. That’s what gets labeled as ADHD. Recent stats for context: - In the US, ADHD diagnoses in children nearly doubled over the past 20 years — from ~6.1% in the late 1990s to 11.4% today (about 7 million kids aged 3–17). - Worldwide, prevalence in children is estimated at 5–7%. - In Europe, rates are generally lower but still significant, around 5–7% in many countries. The same child, raised in a calm, supportive environment, might become highly creative, empathetic, or a natural leader instead. We’ve been telling millions of kids (and adults) they have a “brain disease” when many are simply reacting to the stressed world we’ve built around them. This shifts the conversation from “what’s wrong with you” to “what happened to you?” It feels like a much more compassionate — and honest — way to look at it. Do you think many ADHD diagnoses today are more about environment and sensitivity than an innate “disorder”? Have you seen this play out in your own life or with people close to you?

TUCKER CARLSON: “How can world governments kill more than 10 million people and leave some large undetermined number disabled for life? And not say a word about it. Not apologize. Not work to fix it. Not work to make the families whole. I mean, just leave it by the side of the road like a corpse and keep marching. I don’t understand that. How can that happen? STEVE KIRSCH: “Believe me, I’m surprised, as well. You know, I can’t get an audience with anybody in the United States Congress. Except for Senator Ron Johnson. Like, I can’t have a dialogue. They won’t talk to me. Nobody wants to know. They don’t want to know the truth. It’s like autism in this country. You know, autism has been around for a very long time. And we’ve known from the statistics that vaccines cause autism. It’s the leading cause of autism. Now, can we even get a discussion about that?” TUCKER CARLSON: “May I? May I ask you to pause that? I mean, the statement you just made is verboten. I mean, no person who wanted to say work at the Atlantic magazine or who takes the New York Times on a daily basis would ever say something like that because you’re not allowed to say that. Tell us why you say that?” STEVE KIRSCH: “Because it’s true. I’ve collected my own data just independently, to look at, at the connection between vaccines and autism. And it’s amazing. I had over 10,000 parents, tell me about their kids. And I said, hey, tell me about your kids. Tell me how many vaccines they got, and tell me if they have autism. Tell me if they have ADHD. You know, just tell me about your kids. Tell me about the medical conditions. And tell me about how many shots they get. And it’s a straight line. The more shots you get, the more likely you are to get autism. And it’s the same thing for ADHD. It’s the same thing for PANDAS. It’s the same thing for autoimmune diseases. I mean that it is basically the more shots you get, the less healthy the kids are.”
