Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

Back in the ‘90s, there was one arcade game you were almost guaranteed to find: Irem’s Ninja Baseball Bat Man. It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. If you’ve never played it before, do yourself a favor and try it on an emulator.

Let me introduce Altered Beast, one of Sega’s classic arcade games. If you’re in your 40s and spent any time in arcades, you’ve probably seen it at least once—more likely many times. When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. The transformation animation is one of the highlights of the game, but it’s missing there, so it doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the arcade version.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

Did you know that arcade cabinets with CRT monitors actually had three different resolutions? Most classic 2D arcade games used a 15kHz (320×240) resolution. This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap.
