NEWS: DeepMind teaches robots to play soccer. In a paper released today Google's DeepMind details how they used Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) to train low-cost, miniature humanoid robots in dynamic environments, allowing them to play a simplified one-versus-one (1v1) soccer game. The robots, equipped with 20 actuated joints, were initially trained in simulation using the MuJoCo physics engine. Through this training, they learned robust and dynamic movement skills like rapid fall recovery, walking, turning, and kicking. The robots seamlessly transitioned between these skills, even surpassing expectations, and developed a basic strategic understanding of the game. During matches, the trained robots demonstrated agile skills such as turning, kicking moving balls, and dynamic defensive blocking. They quickly combined these skills, showcasing their adaptability and outperforming scripted baselines. The robots walked faster, got up quicker, and kicked faster than their counterparts. Individual skills were first trained in isolation within the simulation environment, and then composed in a self-play setting. Demystifying China's Dancing Robots: How Did They Catch Handkerchiefs?🇨🇳🤖 16 humanoid robots from Chinese robotics company, Unitree, took center stage at the annual #SpringFestivalGala. The robots seamlessly coordinated with 16 human dancers to perform a traditional Yangko dance, a vibrant folk art form from northeast China, blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge technology. One of the most captivating moments came when the robots showcased their ability to manipulate handkerchiefs, a signature element of Yangko dance. With precise mechanical arm movements, the robots sent the handkerchiefs twirling and soaring through the air, creating a dazzling visual spectacle that symbolized the perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. To maintain the stable upright standing position is already a challenge for current humanoid robots – consider the shaky steps and tendency to roll off even a small incline of Elon Musk's Optimus. To toss a handkerchief and catch it back in place requires the integration of sensors, algorithm and smart design. "We've designed a very clever mechanism that integrates multiple AI control algorithms. There are two motors at the end of the robotic arm: one maintains a high-speed spinning motion, while the other ensures that the handkerchief can be thrown out and then retracted," Unitree's marketing representative said. From compliance to working safely around humans to whole-body manipulation of heavy objects, combining force and position control can dramatically expand the capabilities of robots. This is especially true for legged robots, which have so much ability to exert forces on the world around them. But how do we train robots which can do this? At first I thought the robots were worth ~75% a busboy, but they’re better than that. With robots moving the food and dirty dishes, the servers stay nearby and watch the tables, rarely leaving to return to the kitchen, improving service. This is the future of big restaurants. I don’t know the history of restaurant robots but as far as I can tell, this is a Chinese innovation, the type that they are supposedly incapable of creating.

They mimic the flexible movements of octopus arms and elephant trunks to grasp objects. 🐘 SpiRobs use simple cables to move, making them easy to control and operate. They can scale from small to large sizes, ranging from centimeters to meters. The robots can adapt to different object shapes, improving their grasping ability.
