While on an inspection tour of Adeniji Adele, Oroyinyin, Idumagbo, Ojo Giwa, Jankara, Aroloya and environs, to assess the level of work as regards Lagos Island urban regeneration project today, we allayed fears of Lagos Island residents regarding the recent flooding experienced assuring residents that necessary measures are in place to effectively manage the floods. The urban regeneration project when completed, is expected to address the perennial flooding issues in axis. The ongoing urban regeneration construction work is causing a bit of inconvenience for Lagos Island residents and we apologize. The inconvenience is temporary for us to give a permanent solution to what has become a disturbing phenomenon on Lagos Island for a while. The government has also set up a pumping station at Adeniji Adele Underbridge temporarily to pump out storm water in Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, Oroyinyin and other areas in Lagos Island following the flooding of the areas due to ongoing constructions. These pumping station will allow the construction work to continue unabated in other areas. The urban regeneration completion will be in phases which will be between nine, fifteen, eighteen and 24 months. So in the maximum of two years, the project will be completed. I have also instructed that the illegal shanties constructed on the drainage channel of King Ado High School on Ojo Giwa be removed whilst also instructing that a building under construction on Idi Oluwo be sealed for dumping their building materials on the drainage channel. We therefore wish to appeal to our citizens to desist from the unwholesome acts of dumping of wastes on the roads, road medians, drainages, open spaces, because the act is a recipe for crisis beyond flooding, health challenges and other disasters. On the inspection team were the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi- Akodu; Permanent Secretaries, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Tajudeen; Office of Drainage Services Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; Office of Infrastructure, Engr. After serving a 7-day abatement notice with no compliance, we are left with no choice but to take decisive action. Our inspection of Lagos Island’s drainage projects confirms significant progress. The Onikoyi/Turnbull collector linking Banana Island and Park View Estate construction will end flooding in these areas when completed. However, we’ve observed a dangerous trend: traders who were earlier removed from under Idumagbo Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge (Oja Oba/Adeniji Adele) have returned illegally. Let me be clear: We cannot prioritize unregulated commerce over safety. These infrastructures are not markets, they are flood prevention assets. If disasters occur, the same traders will blame the government, despite repeated warnings. LASPARK has already approved designs to convert these spaces into regulated parks, but until then, all illegal trading must STOP. We’re expanding street drains into major collectors to handle higher runoff and contain the Banana Island flooding. Today, we commenced a joint enforcement operation at Boundary, Ajegunle, Apapa axis, in collaboration with Navy NNS Beecroft, the Lagos State Task Force, the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. The operation is part of our coordinated effort to restore environmental order, secure public spaces and address activities that threaten sanitation, safety and lawful use of critical corridors within Apapa and its environs. Inter-agency collaboration remains key to achieving lasting environmental compliance and public safety.
