Elon Musk explains why he thinks the phone, apps and operating systems are headed for extinction within 5-6 years, and how it plays out: "We're not going to have a phone in the traditional sense. What we call a phone will really be an edge node for AI inference,...

This is wrong and does not take into consideration the human need to share the experience of art. No one is (and will) be interested in real-time AI content tailored for a single user (unless the user itself). Zeitgeist is achieved through trasversal consumption happening in different layers of society and theough the sharing of the aformentioned art between these layers.

I agree with this but also think a lot of compute can be done on device with local models. Truly thinking machines in your pocket

“There won't be operating systems” is a stronger claim than users won't see them. Something still has to manage the screen, audio and permissions beneath the AI.

Says the guy who put up a huge data center that was burning gas (thanks mr. only I can save the ecosystem) to then turn around and have it generate cartoon pedophilia on demand.

Treating the phone as an AI inference node is a logical step toward decentralized processing, shifting compute from the cloud to the device itself.

Because all these idiots, led by @POTUS and @elonmusk, changed the name, your handle isn’t relevant anymore.

Musk predictions are right on direction and wrong on dates nearly every time

We will as Apple will buy all the IP and remants of the hyperscalers when they collapse, it will then send AI development back to the lab, keep the phone and wait until hardware advances are capable of doing AI at scale much cheaper and without fucking the envioroment.

Yes how many of his predictions have actually come true on the timeline he states? Very few. He's a dreamer and a lolly gager.

Elon Musk just told Joe Rogan every app on your phone will be dead in 5 years. Not struggling. Not declining. Dead. Musk: “You’ll get everything through AI.” Rogan asked the timeline. Musk: “5 or 6 years, something like that.” Rogan: “So 5 or 6 years, apps are like Blockbuster video.” Musk: “Pretty much.” That’s not some AI newsletter prediction. That’s the guy who owns the platform you’re reading this on telling you the entire app economy has an expiration date. Think about how your phone actually works right now. Apps trained your brain to think in boxes. One box for email. One for music. One for video. One for food. One for banking. Your entire digital life is opening and closing 30 different boxes. All day. Every day. AI doesn’t think in boxes. It thinks in intent. Musk: “Whatever you can think of or really whatever the AI can anticipate you might want, it’ll show you.” Not what you search for. Not what you tap on. What you haven’t even thought of yet. The app needed you to know what you wanted and go get it yourself. AI arrives before the thought fully forms. That’s not an upgrade to the interface. That’s the end of the interface. Musk went further. He said most of the content people consume in 5 to 6 years will be AI-generated. Music. Video. All of it. Rogan admitted AI-generated music is already his favorite. Not a prediction. Present tense. The ground already moved. Most people are still arguing about which streaming app has the better library. Every major tech company of the last 15 years was built on one assumption. That you would come to them. Download their app. Learn their layout. Give them your attention. Give them your data. AI inverts that entire model. You stop going to anything. Everything comes to you. Anticipated, filtered, delivered before you finish the sentence. The App Store doesn’t shrink. The concept of an app store stops making sense entirely. You don’t browse a shelf of tools when the tool already knows what you need. The phone isn’t dying. But the 30 icons on your home screen are the Blockbuster shelves of 2031. And right now, you’re still renting.

Elon Musk on Grok: “I think an AI that is sort of SpaceX’s baby will be a very good AI. I think SpaceX is a collection of some of the very best humans on Earth, both in capability and morality and goodness, and I think we want to have an AI that is born of that capability and that morality and that goodness. I think that’s very, very important. So I’d like to encourage people to help out, actually, with the AI hardware on the ground and the AI software and, of course, with the AI satellites. Solar is going to be a very important part of that. The TerraFab will be a very important part of that, but we must also succeed on the software front, and we’re going to be training Grok on the sum total of all SpaceX information. So in a way, it will be trained on you. You will effectively be the parents of the AI. It will inherit your thoughts and ideas and beliefs, and I think that’s a good thing. So, yeah, we’ve got to win here on the AI hardware and the AI software. That maybe is the most important message. I think that is actually the most important message I wanted to convey today is that we must win on AI because the future is overwhelmingly AI and robots. So we won’t ultimately be able to control the AI. It’ll be too smart for that. But just like if you have a child that is a super genius child, you can still instill in that child the values and beliefs that you think are good and right. And so that’s why it’s incredibly important that we succeed with Grok. So, yeah, well, Grok 4.5 you’ve tried probably. We’ve got 4.6 coming out in about a week. And then 4.7 should be really pretty special. So I’d like to encourage everyone at SpaceX to use AI and to make it better.”
