Emirates 777 and Ethiopian 737 MAX avoid collision at 37,000ft while flying over the Horn of Africa.

This incident on March 24, about a month after two other aircraft nearly collided in the same airspace, adds to the growing concerns about safety and air traffic control competency in the region.

Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority said in a statement, "On the night of Sunday, March 24, 2024, around 12:43, Emirates flight UAE722 flying at an altitude of 37,000ft, and an Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH690 at an altitude of 37,000ft almost collided."

"A few minutes before the collision, the efforts made by the Somaliland Air Traffic Controllers and the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines caused the pilot to quickly change his altitude and climb to 39000ft," said Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority.

“Emirates can confirm that there was no instance of an aircraft proximity event compromising the safety of the aircraft over the airspace and during the date and time in question," according to a statement from an Emirates spokesperson. "All Emirates aircraft are equipped with capabilities to maintain safe separation and distance during operations.”

And a third aircraft to the southeast also at 37000 feet, vectoring to meet the Ethiopian plane. Not only unprofessional, potentially deliberately criminal decisions.

Aren't aircrafts flying in different directions assigned different altitudes? Why coming from different directions and maintaining same 37,000ft for appreciable time?

With TCAS, there is really no cause for alarm. ATC is no longer even required to resolve the issue
