Even in portrait mode, this jaw-dropping Stanley Kubrick shot from 1968 pulls off a gravity-defying trick. No wires, no CGI...just pure practical filmmaking.

The set made a lot of noise as it rotated. The film's quiet soundtrack-- all added later-- helped sell the wonder.

A later shot, where Bowman descends a ladder and walks around to eat with Poole, is also impressive.

I can't wrap my head around how they did it.

Makes me wonder, has there been done any other space film in the 1960s or 1970s where the effects look flawless until today?

An extraordinary scene.

Fantastic sequence complete with mournful soundtrack. Outside of the trip to the moon, this stayed with me more than any other science fiction movie.
