Every few years a new silly speed-reading hack becomes popular, here's the latest one: It's called Quantum Speed-Reading (QSR). How does it work? The faster you flip through a book, the faster you 'read' it. Using QSR, kids can 'read' 100,000 words in 5 minutes. Yumiko Tobitani, the creator... of QSR, presented no scientific evidence for her method. Instead, she says that "when a book is flipped through at high speed the words are transformed into images and come out as pictures," and that flipping through a book helps you pick up "the thought vibrations emanating from it." QSR training centers are popping up across China and Japan and charging students $860 to teach them this new reading method.show more

When I say this, people think I mean it metaphorically, but no, I mean students are being told to literally guess at words. Here's a teacher training video where a teacher demonstrates how she teaches a class of kindergarteners to "read" a word that THEY CAN'T SEE The teacher refers to this as "reading and analyzing text". She was taught that guessing at pictures IS reading, and now parrots that nonsense to any other students, parents, and teachers who will listen.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on why reading fast is overrated: At a Berkshire Hathaway meeting, shareholder Keith McGawan asks Buffett for advice on reading faster, noting that Buffett gets through five newspapers a day plus a steady diet of 10Ks and 10Qs. Buffett's answer is disarmingly humble. Despite his legendary reading habit, he confesses: "Unfortunately, I'm not a fast reader." He even adds that Charlie can read faster than he can, and that "it's a huge advantage to be able to read fast." Then he tells a story on himself, by way of Woody Allen: "I read War and Peace last night in 20 minutes. It's about Russia." That punchline, Buffett admits, hits a little too close: "that's the problem I have when I try and read fast. I get all through reading the book and I say it's about business." Reformulate it. Connect it. Criticize it. That’s how information actually becomes part of you. What’s your take, do you learn and retain more by actively recalling and rewriting, or by highlighting and passive note-taking?

She woke up at 5:45 in the morning, set up outside with her giant copy of It by Stephen King, and committed to reading all 1,153 pages in a single sitting. She tracked her progress hour by hour, pushed through the sun and wind, took one quick lunch break, and finally closed the book at 7 PM — 13 hours later — with the biggest smile. I actually read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in one sitting, and I felt really proud of myself afterward.... and that book is 734 pages. I can’t even imagine powering through all 1,153 pages of It in a single day like she did. There’s something really rewarding about deciding to do something difficult and actually seeing it all the way through. Have you ever finished a book in a single sitting? If so, what book was it?

This is no mere literacy crisis. It is a civilizational one. To fight back, we started an online book club to study the great texts of Western Civilization — if the schools and universities won't teach the great books, we must form reading groups to study them ourselves. Every month, we read a new great work. We've covered texts like Augustine's Confessions, Dante's Inferno, The Count of Monte Cristo, Don Quixote. We're now reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. We must study the ideas upon which the West was built if we are to preserve it. It takes effort to read these texts, and even more to read them well. Get off the phone and read a book. Last weekend I spent several hours going through Dante's Inferno and using Claude to reteach myself the lessons in it. You can do that now. You can have a genuine conversation with AI about one of the greatest works in human history and come out smarter than when you started. Instead most people are scrolling through 30-second videos that have absolutely nothing to do with their lives. Dopamine hits. That's all it is. You get to choose what goes into your head. Choose better.

As a parent, lap reading is a joy. It’s a chance to cuddle your little one, while exposing them to rich vocabulary, concepts of print, and the wonder of books. When it comes to infants, however, lap reading can deprive babies of their favorite (and most important) sight: YOU. Which is why you might want to explore face-to-face reading as well. (With your baby facing toward you and the book simultaneously.) Developmentally, there are multiple benefits to allowing your baby to see you as you read together. Your little one is an expert at “reading” your face. This posture allows your baby to track your eyes to discover what you’re tuning in to. It also allows them to watch your mouth and learn how you’re making the words and sounds that accompany the pictures. This clever little one illustrates the case beautifully, creating a face-to-face experience of her own. Watch as our hero divides her attention between the book (and her important page turning responsibility!) and dad’s face - which she swivels her head to admire with equal (if not greater) interest. Kudos to dad, as well, as he balances book time and face time with his daughter - taking time to honor her interest in connection and observation. The logistics can obviously be a little trickier (consider reading face-to-face as your partner holds baby in their lap as one potential solution) - but the benefits are well worth the effort.
