So what happens when the math stops working? Studios stop taking risks. "When things are more expensive, people get risk averse. And when they're risk averse, they do the same shit. That's how you get the safe, homogenized stuff. And so it's a vicious cycle." The second thing killing it is streaming, people see the trailer, think it looks good, and decide to wait for it to hit Netflix. The only movies that survive the math are the ones audiences refuse to wait for which is why every theater slate looks like a Marvel calendar and why even Ryan Coogler making a Creed film with Michael B. He then quickly switches to arguing it’s actually the rest of the world that is escalating against russia “on every front we could possibly imagine”. Peterson has consistently repeated key Kremlin narratives about russia’s supposed red lines - ignoring each time it has proven wrong. It’s worth reminding that Peterson became famous while arguing people shouldn’t “exceed their domain of competence” and should tidy their room before trying to understand and change the world. In honor of Y Combinator's 20th anniversary, here are my 6 favorite lessons: 1. The 7 minute espresso rule: Our first meeting with Sam Altman lasted just seven minutes. The batch hadn’t even officially started yet and my cofounder Ryan Rowe and I drove down from Mountain View to the tiny SF YC outpost to meet him. Sam was making an espresso when we walked in. He opened with – “have you launched”? We said no, too many bugs. Our product, kimono, made it easy to just point and click to build a web scraper. Our promise was to get you an API in 60 seconds, without writing a single line of code. But, the web is vast, and websites are very different. We needed it to work on a large enough spectrum of sites so that our first users would have a good experience. It worked on just a handful of sites at the time. Sam pushed us to make sure we were launched in less than 2 weeks. We debated, highlighting the complexity of the bugs and the limits of underlying headless browsing technology. The espresso finished brewing, he picked it up, looked at us and said, “well, you better get going then and fix those bugs”. We left, launched within those next two weeks and learned one of the most important lessons that day - speed matters. Ship something you’re embarrassed by. 2. There are no experts. Ryan and I were not prepared for the rapid influx of user on launch day. We did 88 user interviews to validate our product idea, and everyone basically said they wouldn’t use it. We thought they were wrong and built it anyway. It got tons of traffic on day 1. We didn’t sleep in the 48 hours following because our servers and database kept crashing. We hadn’t indexed it properly. We realized we weren’t the experts and needed to hire one. We went over to Michael Seibel's apartment for advice. Michael smiled and told us about the early days at SocialCam, that eventually became Twitch – experts thought the streaming video problem was too hard to be possible. The answer wasn’t hiring an expert, but hiring someone young, capable and naïve enough to give it an earnest try. So we opted to just figure it out ourselves. 3. Messages in Pizza Boxes. Startups win through incredible customer service, then through product, not the other way around. Michael Seibel told us how SocialCam’s streaming infrastructure went down while a key teammate was unreachable off-grid in a Tahoe cabin for the weekend. Normal people would have waited until Monday. Not Michael. He called a local pizza delivery place and asked the delivery person to send a large pizza with an urgent message in the box to the cabin. Their infrastructure was back up in hours. 4. The Twinkle can matter more than the TAM. Ambition matters just as much as practicality. Before demo day, we were struggling with the end note of our pitch. We knew the value of our product, and had a fanatical and fast-growing user base, but the market size we calculated either seemed so ridiculously big that it was not plausible, or so narrow that it was equally silly. Paul Graham and Geoff Ralston sat with us and showed us that if we can really pull it off at scale, it would be bigger than Google. So, we could skip the market size, if we really believed it. PG suggested not talking about market size, but just making sure people could see the twinkle in our eyes when we talked about what you might be able to do with a structured copy of the internet that’s larger than Google’s. 5. You’re always at the Origin. Our demo day was successful beyond our wildest beliefs. Afterwards, Geoff Ralston drew a chart for us on a whiteboard. It was a hockey stick. He asked us where we thought we were. It was a rhetorical question. He said we were at the origin, and that the most important thing is to remember that. Sam Altman doubled down. When he invested in Kimono, he gave us a Zimbabwean Trillion dollar note (the result of extreme hyperinflation in Zimbabwe), as a cautionary reminder that the fundraising and valuation mean nothing. We have channeled this into our culture at @TheArenaAI with our ritual around neon shoelaces and a pair of neon track spikes hanging on the wall to remind us that we’re at the Olympic starting line, but we don’t have any medals yet. 6. High bandwidth discussions with users don’t happen over email. The Collison brothers, who founded Stripe, took user engagement to the next level – so much so that “Collison installation” is part of YC lore. John Collison told us that talking to users was essential because email and chat conversations were not “high bandwidth” enough. He emphasized the importance of what you can learn being with users in person or talking to them over Skype (remember, this was early 2014!). We took this to heart, and spoke to hundreds of users at Kimono regularly over Skype. One power user Alexander Chung, who I met this way, has become a close friend and even attended my wedding in India. At Arena, we now go a step further and regularly fly to our users. We over-invest to a degree that is almost crazy in order to be more than a supplier — a true partner to our early customers. YC taught us it’s the only way to understand their problems on the ground and really make sure our products work for them. YC taught us to outsource very little. Own the problem. Own the outcome. During my month in Europe, I made it a point to talk to everyone, from financial professionals to priests and ordinary people in cafes. I would sit at a cafe, order a coffee and start random political conversations with strangers. Europeans actually love this. They are curious, open and engaged in political life. You can’t do that in America. Most Americans will avoid the topic, change the subject, know nothing about it, or walk away. What I noticed is this: Europeans are misinformed. Americans are indoctrinated. Europeans are generally more sophisticated and educated, but their problem is a lack of independent media and misplaced trust in mainstream sources. Americans, on the other hand, are deeply indoctrinated. In the U.S. you’re expected to be something - ist, capitalist, socialist, communist, Trump-ist, Democrat, republican etc. Ideology becomes an identity. People identify with it instead of just pursuing it and leaving the room for critical thinking. This comes from a society of lonely, medicated individuals searching for meaning and finding it in the wrong places. As a result, they cling to ideas or leaders even when those leaders directly contradict their values and betray them. Take Trump supporters as a clear example. Who were Trump supporters before he got into the office? Many were originally anti-war, anti-regime change, religious and ‘America First’ people. Yet now they support a man who started wars, raised the military budget, supported regime change, killed people for it and flirted with economic collapse and even made genocidal threats on social media during eastern. Before he even reversed his actions/statements from today, these Trump-ists defended his genocide statements viemently. That is what indoctrination looks like. Facts do not matter at all. On the other side, Biden-aligned Democrats are just as indoctrinated, only in the opposite direction. The U.S. is not a misinformed nation, there is plenty of independent media around, it is a fully indoctrinated and uneducated nation. That’s the real problem. Europe, by contrast, is misinformed but educated, not indoctrinated (leaders maybe, but not the people). Let me give you an example. In Germany, I struck up a conversation with a young couple at a cafe about Russia and Ukraine. They supported Ukraine but understood Russia’s grievances. They said they understand Russian position but Russia should not have invaded. I asked: 'What would you do if you were Putin after repeated failed negotiations and lies from the West? What would you have done to help your people in Donbas?' At first he shrugged. He knew about the Minsk agreements, failed deals and lies. He knew about the coup and Victoria Nuland. Then surprisingly, Max admitted he might have conducted a military operation. Which took me by surprise. So I said: You would have started a conflict? He replayed- No, I would have conducted an operation. I said that is exactly what Russia did. So why are you criticizing them? He insisted Russia started a war. So I challenged him: “Do you really think Putin would attack with only 70- 80k troops? No-one starts a war with these numbers not even the dumbest guy on earth. Hitler invaded Poland with 1.25 million. Putin isn’t stupid to start a war with just 70k and hope for the best. It's idiotic. Max paused. Thought about it checked the numbers and said: Ok, well that still does mean that he will stop, he wants to recreate the soviet union. I asked why he believed Russia wanted to recreate the Soviet Union. Where did he hear that from? His answer? - He heard it in the news! I dared him to find an actual quote from Putin stating this. I told him I had all the time in the world and he was welcome to search wherever he wanted. After 20-25 minutes of research and testing multiple sources including ChatGPT, he discovered no such quote exists, that Putin never said anything like that. It was pure propaganda. He was shocked. “How is this possible? This was everywhere in the news,” he said. After clearing up that piece of misinformation, I asked Max whether he still had an issue with Russia and if so, what specifically bothered him. He said it wasn’t anything personal, but rather Russia’s history with the Soviet Union that troubled him, and he wouldn’t feel comfortable having Russia as a partner. I looked at him and reminded him that we were literally sitting in a country that had been fully Nazi just two generations ago and if that’s the logic we were going to use, then Germany his own country, should be completely isolated and never trusted again. He burst out laughing, realizing his mistake and his own stupidity. By the time we finished our breakfast and coffee, he was already following all the independent YouTube channels I suggested and the X profiles I recommended. This is the difference between being misinformed and being indoctrinated. Misinformed people are flexible, they can think, indoctrinated people are not. Europe suffers from misinformation, which can be corrected. The U.S. on the other hand, suffers from indoctrination, which is much harder perhaps impossible to fix. Every morning in cafes across Greece, Germany and elsewhere, I would sit down and start conversations about politics. Europeans are comfortable with this, they seem to enjoy it. I learned a lot myself, even some interesting details about Hitler that I never knew. Americans, by contrast, often seem unable to escape indoctrination, regardless of the facts. The same pattern appears in American religion. Europe, by comparison is largely atheist now. The only religion left there is a kind of cultural Christianity, people may believe and maybe pray at home, but they rarely go to church. Most churches are empty. Which is not good, the US is way more religious but that faith has problem. In my opinion, most American Christians today, not all, but most are fanatics. It's like a circus of fanatics who had turned the church into a theater or a political tool. Things like dancing, misplaced behavior and sermons that use the Bible to indoctrinate people into one political belief or another, nothing about actually teaching Jesus Christ or his message. Bible verses are twisted to support political ideology and this is what most American Christians seem to follow today. It’s very sad. Priests themselves go viral for completely out-of-control, ridiculous behavior like weird dance etc. These are people who call themselves Christians. There is nothing Christian about that. Faith is supposed to be about quiet selfless good, humility and genuine belief, not a clown show in the church. It’s disgusting! During my month in Europe, I made it a point to talk to everyone, from financial professionals to priests and ordinary people in cafes. I would sit at a cafe, order a coffee and start random political conversations with strangers. Europeans actually love this. They are curious, open and engaged in political life. You can’t do that in America. Most Americans will avoid the topic, change the subject, know nothing about it, or walk away. What I noticed is this: Europeans are misinformed. Americans are indoctrinated. Europeans are generally more sophisticated and educated, but their problem is a lack of independent media and misplaced trust in mainstream sources. Americans, on the other hand, are deeply indoctrinated. In the U.S. you’re expected to be something - ist, capitalist, socialist, communist, Trump-ist, Democrat, republican etc. Ideology becomes an identity. People identify with it instead of just pursuing it and leaving the room for critical thinking. This comes from a society of lonely, medicated individuals searching for meaning and finding it in the wrong places. As a result, they cling to ideas or leaders even when those leaders directly contradict their values and betray them. Take Trump supporters as a clear example. Who were Trump supporters before he got into the office? Many were originally anti-war, anti-regime change, religious and ‘America First’ people. Yet now they support a man who started wars, raised the military budget, supported regime change, killed people for it and flirted with economic collapse and even made genocidal threats on social media during eastern. Before he even reversed his actions/statements from today, these Trump-ists defended his genocide statements viemently. That is what indoctrination looks like. Facts do not matter at all. On the other side, Biden-aligned Democrats are just as indoctrinated, only in the opposite direction. The U.S. is not a misinformed nation, there is plenty of independent media around, it is a fully indoctrinated and uneducated nation. That’s the real problem. Europe, by contrast, is misinformed but educated, not indoctrinated (leaders maybe, but not the people). Let me give you an example. In Germany, I struck up a conversation with a young couple at a cafe about Russia and Ukraine. They supported Ukraine but understood Russia’s grievances. They said they understand Russian position but Russia should not have invaded. I asked: 'What would you do if you were Putin after repeated failed negotiations and lies from the West? What would you have done to help your people in Donbas?' At first he shrugged. He knew about the Minsk agreements, failed deals and lies. He knew about the coup and Victoria Nuland. Then surprisingly, Max admitted he might have conducted a military operation. Which took me by surprise. So I said: You would have started a conflict? He replayed- No, I would have conducted an operation. I said that is exactly what Russia did. So why are you criticizing them? He insisted Russia started a war. So I challenged him: “Do you really think Putin would attack with only 70- 80k troops? No-one starts a war with these numbers not even the dumbest guy on earth. Hitler invaded Poland with 1.25 million. Putin isn’t stupid to start a war with just 70k and hope for the best. It's idiotic. Max paused. Thought about it checked the numbers and said: Ok, well that still does mean that he will stop, he wants to recreate the soviet union. I asked why he believed Russia wanted to recreate the Soviet Union. Where did he hear that from? His answer? - He heard it in the news! I dared him to find an actual quote from Putin stating this. I told him I had all the time in the world and he was welcome to search wherever he wanted. After 20-25 minutes of research and testing multiple sources including ChatGPT, he discovered no such quote exists, that Putin never said anything like that. It was pure propaganda. He was shocked. “How is this possible? This was everywhere in the news,” he said. After clearing up that piece of misinformation, I asked Max whether he still had an issue with Russia and if so, what specifically bothered him. He said it wasn’t anything personal, but rather Russia’s history with the Soviet Union that troubled him, and he wouldn’t feel comfortable having Russia as a partner. I looked at him and reminded him that we were literally sitting in a country that had been fully Nazi just two generations ago and if that’s the logic we were going to use, then Germany his own country, should be completely isolated and never trusted again. He burst out laughing, realizing his mistake and his own stupidity. By the time we finished our breakfast and coffee, he was already following all the independent YouTube channels I suggested and the X profiles I recommended. This is the difference between being misinformed and being indoctrinated. Misinformed people are flexible, they can think, indoctrinated people are not. Europe suffers from misinformation, which can be corrected. The U.S. on the other hand, suffers from indoctrination, which is much harder perhaps impossible to fix. Every morning in cafes across Greece, Germany and elsewhere, I would sit down and start conversations about politics. Europeans are comfortable with this, they seem to enjoy it. I learned a lot myself, even some interesting details about Hitler that I never knew. Americans, by contrast, often seem unable to escape indoctrination, regardless of the facts. The same pattern appears in American religion. Europe, by comparison is largely atheist now. The only religion left there is a kind of cultural Christianity, people may believe and maybe pray at home, but they rarely go to church. Most churches are empty. Which is not good, the US is way more religious but that faith has problem. In my opinion, most American Christians today, not all, but most are fanatics.
