The violence against Zimbabwean human rights lawyer Doug Coltart today at the parliamentary hearings for Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 at the Harare City Sports Centre is disgraceful. The racist abuse directed at him by fellow Zimbabweans is equally shameful, exposing a dangerous erosion of tolerance, respect for the rule of law, and basic democratic values. Whatever happens with Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, it is already tainted by these actions of ZANUPF hooligans, thugs, and despicable individuals. You cannot take parliamentary hearings to the people and then assault them for airing their views, for opposing what you are saying, or for holding alternative opinions. That is not consultation, it is intimidation, and it completely undermines the legitimacy of the entire process. Beating up a fellow Zimbabwean who is a lawyer, stealing his phone, and preventing him from speaking is the very worst conduct in any parliamentary hearing process, including this Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3. Those behind these actions should be deeply ashamed, because they are not only undermining the process, they are embarrassing the country and eroding respect for the rule of law.

I have just listened to this video by the new Bulawayo Mayor, David Coltart, I like what I heard. Bulawayo has a real chance for turning around with this mindset of zero tolerance to corruption, craft competence and unity. He must be supported by the Bulawayo community, all of it! Through his previous record as a GNU minister, he will be able to attract international support for Bulawayo. David will not mourn about ZANUPF, he is a good example of a person who will try until stopped, he did that as a GNU minister. You are in for good times Bulawayo, where he is frustrated, the citizens must stand with their mayor. I like his broad based message of working with everyone and not treating his work in partisan ways.

Although Coltart came a distant number last, after he was heavily defeated in the CCC ‘community caucus’ candidate selection for Ward 4 in Bulawayo, Chamisa imposed him as the winner, ahead of the real winnera, as Harare’s choice for Bulawayo mayor. It is outrageous for Coltart to think he can be the mayor of a local community whose language he does not speak, despite having been born there 66 years ago and having worked there as a lawyer for 40 years. The best he can do is to pronounce 'Bulawayo' as 'Bhuluweyo', just like the Rhodies pronounced it 43 years ago. Hayikhona!

Here is a SOLID argument for ED2030. The MOST CONSEQUENTIAL project implemented by President President of Zimbabwe is the Gwayi - Shangani dam. This dam will COMPLETELY transform the fortunes of Matabeleland North & Bulawayo province. According to Engineers onsite, it’s 74% complete! They all upbeat about completing the project this year. For me, it’s the massive irrigation potential that it will unlock & the permanent eradication of water shortages in Bulawayo. ED can be President until 2030, he knows what he is doing.

My recent visit to Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, for the inauguration of the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, served as a poignant reminder that sustainable development must rise above the fray of partisan polarization. I was elected by 86% of the Bulawayo people but i must not serve more than my term, its a moral and honourable thing to do! Denford Sithole was taken at Nketa Hall shortly after a consultation meeting where he openly opposed the amendment. Witnesses say he was taken by an unidentified man in civilian clothes who drove away in a car with registration number AGF 570. His whereabouts are currently unknown. In a separate incident in Bindura, a Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) student was also allegedly abducted for organising fellow students to attend public consultations in large numbers to reject the bill.

An hour ago, I was on South Africa’s public broadcaster, the SABC News News discussing the implications of Zimbabwe’s new law, Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which came into effect two days ago. The amendment extends President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office by an additional two years to 2030, removes the direct election of the President by citizens and transfers that responsibility to Parliament, and effectively removes the elections that had been scheduled for 2028. We also discussed what these changes mean not only for Zimbabwe but for the entire region, particularly South Africa, which has borne the brunt of migration from Zimbabwe, both legal and illegal, driven largely by the country’s prolonged economic and political crises. What happens in Zimbabwe never stays in Zimbabwe. Political instability, economic decline, and democratic backsliding inevitably have consequences for neighbouring countries. That is why Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 is not merely a Zimbabwean issue; it is a regional issue with far-reaching political, economic, and social implications.

Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa to Bulawayo via Ndola in Zambia, taking about six hours and 35 minutes. The route goes from Bole International Airport to Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Zambia. The continuation flight from Ndola to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo takes one hour and 40 minutes.

In the second matter before the Constitutional Court, filed by former opposition Member of Parliament Prince Dubeko Sibanda, the argument was that Parliament could not lawfully debate Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 because the bill itself is unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court ruled that the application was not yet ripe for determination, meaning that the parliamentary process must first run its course before the applicant can return to court to challenge the outcome. Once again, many lawyers have described the Court’s approach as an example of constitutional avoidance. In their view, the Court is declining to engage with the substantive constitutional questions now and is instead postponing their determination. However, the issues will not disappear. Even if the matter proceeds through the High Court first, it is almost inevitable that it will eventually return to the Constitutional Court on appeal for a final determination on the merits. In the second matter before the Constitutional Court, filed by former opposition Member of Parliament Prince Dubeko Sibanda, the argument was that Parliament could not lawfully debate Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 because the bill itself is unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court ruled that the application was not yet ripe for determination, meaning that the parliamentary process must first run its course before the applicant can return to court to challenge the outcome. Once again, many lawyers have described the Court’s approach as an example of constitutional avoidance. In their view, the Court is declining to engage with the substantive constitutional questions now and is instead postponing their determination. However, the issues will not disappear. Even if the matter proceeds through the High Court first, it is almost inevitable that it will eventually return to the Constitutional Court on appeal for a final determination on the merits.
