As families and local residents protested these unethical and brutal actions, Taliban forces opened fire on civilians, killing at least two people and injuring around 20 others. Five years of Taliban rule have pushed Afghanistan to the brink of collapse. This is not Gaza under bombardment or Ukraine under missile and drone attacks. That’s how long millions of Afghan girls and women have been waiting, for classrooms to reopen, for workplaces to welcome them back, for their dreams to breathe again. I was one of the lucky ones. I had the chance to learn, work, grow, be independent, and make choices about my own life; like any human being should. But I often think: this could have been the story of countless other Afghan girls if only they had been given the same opportunities. Education and work are not privileges, they are basic human rights. Until every girl in Afghanistan can study and work freely, the world will continue to miss out on their talent, ideas, and contributions. In just a few years, Afghanistan has lost what took two decades to achieve, especially for women. Decades of progress have been rolled back, taking with them the voices, dreams, and potential of millions. Today marks four years since Afghanistan changed in a way that put the future of its girls and women on hold. I stand in solidarity with them - those whose dreams have been taken away entirely.
