The 1956 Goodyear Inflatoplane was an inflatable experimental aircraft intended for military use, inflated in ~5 min, flew at 60 mph on a 40-42 hp engine. Tragically, Lt. "Pug" Wallace died in a crash when a control cable jammed, wing folded into prop 👀, deflated, & hit his head before he fell out and into a lake. Project was cancelled in 1973.

At the time, he feared the Mariner 4 Probe mission might discover intelligent alien life, instantly spoiling his film’s premise of humanity’s first cosmic encounter. Kubrick contacted Lloyd’s of London to secure an insurance policy covering plot-ruining extraterrestrial proof before the release of his film. Lloyd’s quoted a premium Clarke called “slightly astronomical”… prompting Kubrick to abandon the idea - and gamble on the universe.
