This abnormal accumulation increases intracranial pressure, causing the head to enlarge and potentially leading to developmental delays, vision problems, seizures, and neurological damage if left untreated. The swelling seen is not due to bone growth, but to excess fluid compressing delicate brain tissue. Hydrocephalus can be congenital or acquired, and early diagnosis is critical for protecting brain function. The surgical procedure shown involves placing a shunt system, one of the most common and effective treatments. The shunt redirects excess CSF from the brain to another part of the body—usually the abdomen where it can be safely absorbed.
